The wide-fire gasket has more surface than the stock gasket and any force applied by torquing the head studs is applied over a greater area. The standard gasket has less surface than the wide-fire. As pressure applied by combustion is measured in lbs/square inch, the resistance of the gasket will have to match or exceed the psi of combustion. The same stud force applied to a wider area (wide fire-ring) will have less psi resistance than the narrower stock unit, ie, it has less clamping force.

My head studs are ARP studs of higher strength than stock and about the same diameter as stock studs. The cometic gasket leaked both externally and internally in the combustion chamber.

I got the usual bull puppy from Cometic how only an idiot could cause their gasket to fail so I had no interest in a Cometic replacement. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice........

Back on the road Took me about 20 hrs! If I have to do this again I think I can do it quite a bit quicker. I also removed the the belt covers so I had to re-tension everything up front and do a lot of cleaning.

Hadn't been keeping up with your other thread, sorry to hear about your headgasket. I know others will bash this but i'm pretty happy with my widefire HG so far... been running lots of boost and compression with no issues. Plus we use a widefire on most of our race car engines and have used cometic in the past, but if you really want to go ***** out then just get a copped head gasket

So, what about o-ringing the head? What are the pros/cons of doing this? What is the reliability of these vs. MLS? I'm going to be removing the engine and sending the head out for a refresh so what would be the best way to go? I believe you have to have an absolutely flat block and head for a MLS?

20 hours for the first time isn't bad. Glad you got it back on the road.

This is a much debated topic (do a search) with a lot of opinions. I want to be able to keep a close eye on the belts.

nice fix.... keep in mind, you guys can always try this method first;

drain all the coolant and run straight water....

make sure she's chuck full of water....

now, fill your overflow tank with this amazing product (in the LARGE bottle).....

blast the heat and run at idle for 20 minutes.....

NO MORE BLOWN HEAD GASKET.
