Default Local Help Needed First Time Timing/Water pump change

Hey guys my water pump just went out on my 86 951 and I need to change the waterpump and I'm going to change the timing belt as well (balance belt is new and don't have money for anything else right now). I've never done it before so I am looking for someone local to come over and show me how it's done.

I live in Virginia Beach right near CBN off of Indian River Rd. I plan to do this Thursday/Friday, I have those two days off from work. Thanks!

You might try the Reutterwerk forums, I know there are a number of VA guys over there.

Hey bro works for me, maybe with two heads together we can get them done... hopefully someone that has done it will come through if not guess it will be us and a youtube video + clarks-garage lol...

I'm ordering a flywheel lock tomorrow along with my new timing belt, I'm just going to reuse my rollers for now (money's tight) and my balance belt is new. After watching the process it seems easy just should take our time and make sure we do it right. From what I've seen a can use an adjustable wrench instead of the flat 24mm/27mm timing wrench.

If I am wrong on that then someone please let me know so I may order one

Curt said he would but he is actually busy on those days due to work. So I'm still planning for thursday/friday if something comes up( like rain) then I may push it back. I'll keep ya posted Chris. After reading and watching the video's on it, honestly I think we can handle it. I've heard that a timing belt/water pump change takes a few hours so also I also heard you want the car to be cold when do either one of these tasks.

I can say from personal experience that it can be done with an adjustable wrench. I can also say that it is a lot easier with the flat wrench.

What tool are you planning to use to tension the belts? I've never used the arnnworks tools, but I've used the Krickit from Rennbay several times. It definitely takes some finesse to use, but take your time, and make sure that you can get the same reading multiple times. As for the balance shaft belt, I always use the twist method... If you don't want it to whine (much), it'll need to be rather loose.

Take your time and be careful. Good luck!

I plan on using the 90 degree twist method and everything else Van mentions in the video. I'll probably try just the adjustable wrench, I'm sure I will probably regret it but if it can be done then I will do it lol.

Let me get moved (moving Sunday of this weekend) and you can both come UP and use the garage!

Moving into a house with an oversized 2 car garage in Richmond..

Otherwise...

it really isn't as difficult as it might seem... just daunting the first time!

IIRC I can have it said and done in about 2 hours...

That sounds like fun John, I love the short sweet drive to Richmond. Hate most of their roads though.

GET THE FLAT WRENCH. It's definitely worth it. It's really frustrating trying to get the tension 'just right' without being able to adequately control the position of the tensioner roller.
