One item which we may be over looking is that as the gas gets further from the engine it cools. As the gas cools so does it's voume. That being the case, if in fact a 3" is needed at the front, why would a 3" be needed at the rear?

Thing about a 1350F reading at the header and a 400F reading at the exhaust tip.
