tim, what do you mean by true three inch? how true is the cheaper version?

By true 3" I am reffering to the hotside of the turbo, all the way back, in 3" piping. The other 3" testpipe we sell is connected to the stock 2.5" downpipe with a 2.5" flange and then it tapers up to 3".

I paint mine monthly. Just seems to burn off.
(NOT SO much after the test pipe though)

From what I read on their website, and from personal e-mail with Joe Fabiani, Fabspeed catbypass pipe seems to be a true 3" system from the turbocharger, incorporating the downpipe into their testpipe. And it costs $495 retail, compared to $850 (testpipe $500 + downpipe $350) from SFR. Anyone has personal experience with the Fabspeed in terms of quality of construction, sound, and power increase? I have read only good things about it so far.

Wow. That is an outstanding deal. But are you sure that it's the downpipe + testpipe? The pictures on their web site seem to illustrate cat-pipe only...
I wouldn't have any qualms about Fabspeed parts. Running 962's and 944 turbo racecars for more than a decade puts them tops in my book!

Looking on the fabspeed site it does look like its just the cat pipe...can anyone confirm or deny that the fabspeed piece includes the cat test pipe and the down pipe off the turbo??

I'll give em a call tomorow afternoon probably..

The Fabspeed testpipe does not come with the 3" testpipe. As far as we know, SFR is the only company that carries a 3" downpipe. The best part about our downpipe is that you can use it with any aftermarket testpipe or even the factory catylist. This way you can build your system from the turbo back or from the mufler forward;^)

We specifically designed each flange on our downpipe to accept factory crushrings. This is the main reason we were able to make it work. These flanges are truly works of art. They cannot just be cut on a laser cutter or water jet. They have to be milled. They have to be 1/2" thick nickel alloy too. This adds alot of cost to just the flanges alone which is why we have the downpipe priced at $350.

BTW, we have recently added oval mufflers and 4" oval tips to our cat-back exhaust line.

What's the difference between these test pipes and downpipes from the set offered by Huntley Racing?

They all look the same on the web. Many offer a slip in cat, too. But the wastgate pipe looks like it comes in before the cat area rather than after, like the stock system.

Seems like an area for improvement for those needing a cat sometimes.

This was on another thread somewhere but I lost it.

So, what are the ramifications of using a 3" test pipe on an otherwise stock system, esp. the sfr since the flanges are all the same? Is it ok to do this as an incremental step in upgrading, ie when I get the cash for the rest? Will it blow out the baffling in the factory muffler?

It's fine to use a 3" test pipe with a 2.5" cat back exhaust...I don't see what harm it could possibly do.

Baffling in the stock muffler? What baffling? Stick a broom stick in the exhaust and you'll see what i mean.

Well, after some wrenchin' I finally got my Fabspeed testpipe on. The kit was missing the gaskets though ... thankfully I was able to find some gaskets at a local shop that fit.

My impressions are that the car builds boost earlier, holds it longer and the exhaust is a touch louder. All around it feels freer revving and more driveable. I can't quantify the improvements yet, but I plan on getting my G-tech out and doing some runs!

All-in-all I was impressed by the quality and fit of the product. I also like the slip-joint so I can drop in a cat just in case it gets noticed at the next emissions -- cause those bolts up top can be a real hassle!

nice, did you get the 3" testpipe, and you have the stock catback, correct? I am really considering this mod.
