Post 951/944/968 WINDSHIELD Compatability

Hi Fellow Eurogliders, I posted this topic on 968.net a while back and received the response I was looking for, which is that 944 windshields can be used as replacements for 968's. I just wanted to check again on this due to some conflicting information I received from a glass shop today. 968 windshields can cost twice as much compared to 944 windshields based on quite a bit of checking on my behalf. I am considering a 944 winshield if if will work. The auto glass person whom I spoke with today said that the windshields are different sizes. I honestly don't think he was trying to up-sell me, he read off the different sizes based on the "NAGS" number which auto glass shops use for reference. The 968 NAGS number is 710, and the 944 numbers are 360, 531, 603, and 505. They are all 29" high, but the widths differ based on his information. He said that the 968 windshield had a NAGS measurement of 57", while the 944 windshields were listed at 54 1/2" to 55". I am blessed to own both cars right now and every measurement I took is the same on both cars from what I can tell. They look identical except for the antenna on the 951 and the tint. I understand that there were a few tints available based on year. I don't mean to skimp on the 968, but half the price, thats something I need to consider. The difference of course could go into other areas of the 968 or towards my 951. So what do you think? I used a vinyl tape measure and I couldn't determine how NAGS arrived at the 54" through 57" variance, it seemed to be the same for both. Maybe some of you know for sure? (Sorry if you are repeating from the 968 board, that was a while ago though). Hey, I ordered the rear wiper delete plug from BUMPERPLUGS for my 951 and will post some pictures soon (if I can figure out how to post pictures). Regards, Mike

The early 944 windshield are different due to the fact that they are not "flush mount". They have a different gasket and retaining system.

I believe that the later (85.5+) windshields will work in the 968.

I also do not see where there could possibly be a 3" difference.

Get a glass shop to bring out a late '44 windshield and see if it fits.

Better watch this - If your 968 has air-bags (and I'd guess it does), I have been told that the windshields and there set-ups were different on air-bag cars, something to do with the airbags needing to blow out the windshield or some such stuff. I have no documentation of this, just what I've heard through the grapevine.

All 85.5 & newer 944 glass will fit. Air bag equipped cars have different kind of glass than non air bag ones. Since all US version 968's have air bags, 944 air bag version windshield will fit for your 968

Speaking of windshields, does anyone know if there are any lightweight glass replacement windshields available? I know the Turbo Cup cars supposedly had thinner glass, and I need to replace my windshield.

Thanks for information on glass. I have the appointment scheduled for Monday. I'm going to have a 968 windshield available cheap for anyone who needs one (if it doesn't break when it's being removed). I'm only having this one replaced as part of a perfecting project. The present windshield has a star chip in the line of vision which was once chip repaired with the resin, and two chips repaired in the same manner on the passenger side. The glass is not cracked, but the rest of the car is pretty clean, so I'm giving it a new windshield. The car is still for sale, but lately I don't want to sell it anymore. Guess I'm going to keep it available for now, but am leaving it on the higher end of the Coupe price range. It's one of the only ones around here and it is an M030 car. Maybe my 951 will have to go instead. I'm getting way too used to owning two Porsches, and I don't earn that kind of money yet to justify it. Maybe someone would be able to use this windshield, maybe someone has one that's much worse than this one is. I'm located in the Detroit area. Thanks again for the glass input to Scott, Olli, Mark and Carter. Hopefully the glass surgery goes well Monday. Hey, the snow melted again!!! Last week we were hit hard and ice covered everything knocking out power to thousands. I was bummed, I couldn't get the 951 to stop breaking loose!! Regards, Mike
