Post 87 vs 88 and up washer fluid tanks

I have an 87 944 turbo and have found that the washer fluid tanks on the 88 and up models are much cheaper but nobody is able to tell me the difference between these two tanks in terms of size, shape and if the tabs are in the same place so they can both be interchanged. Can someone let me know? Thanks in advance.

I had a '87 n/a & now a '88 951. Tank size should be the same. The only difference i can remember are difference in washer motors. '87 use same VDO bump as VW Golf II.'88 and newer have different pump.

I have seen some tanks that are huge and fill the whole area down low, behind the headlight. Mine is not this large and can be easily removed from the top. Perhaps the size is the reason for the cost difference.

I have an 86 951, an 86 NA Parts car, and my dad has two 89 NA's.

On the two 86 cars (NA and Turbo) the washer resovoir is huge, extending down into the bottom of the engine bay. The two 89 cars (Both NA) have smaller resovoirs that can be removed from the top. When I get around to installing ym water injection system, I plan on swapping in a later resovoir, and mounting the pump underneath it.
