a small pipe can direct airflow out the side of the car, look at the pipe coming off on this 911 motor

I don't think in my case that there are any burs or other restricting forces at work. If you look at the way the stock exhaust is made, there is no way the removing the cat could possibly add resitriction or cause more turbulent exhaust gasses, even if you really did a really ****ty job.

The end result for me was a car that does feel more peppy, sounds better (stock exhaust was too quiet in my opinion), and gets better gas mileage. There's a catch though - if you ever have to pass emissions, you'd better have a bolt on backup (ie a cat). I'm sure sooner or later I'll be posting here asking if anyone has a spare cat for sale

i did the same to my car and it only cost me 8 bucks. i have similar outcome like guards.
as far as the spare i just ordered a used one with considerably less mileage on it as a back up for emissions. i did this last year and it passed.
good luck.

Even if you wanted to go back to a cat setup you could have another cat welded back in...a $50 piece of pipe/weld job should give you a decent boost of performace, but nothing like a 3" replacement piece would....on a turbo the bigger is better almost every time.

Quite a few performance diehards do dump the wastegate to the atmosphere and some have a valve setup much like 1940's/50's 'lake pipes' that switched to the side pipes right off the headers when at the track and back to the rear mounted mufflers when returning home.
