on purely seeing what others are running the EVC4. All the 911 guys run them, and Ive never heard a bad thing about a HKS boost controller.
Ive heard the Profec A can be a pain with its complex electronics and fuzzy logic. Thats just what Ive heard..no direct experience with a profec a.

What about the AVC-R? Does anyone have any experience with this? Danno, you have this, right?

quite a few people run the avc-rs with great success. avcrs have "gear based boost" so you can set lower boost in say gear 1,2 and higher boost in higher gears. that way you dont sit there smoking your rears (ie rage2 w/ 400hp)

I want the one made by Blitz (SBC-id), Im waiting for a used one to come up, If I cant find one buy the time I buy my Tial, im getting a AVCR used. (theyre everywhere)

I have the AVC-R and I reall like it. You can set your boost for different levels at different rpms. You can set the sensitivity in every gear to try to get the same boost in the lower gears. Then it learns as you drive to figure out the duty cycle to hold the boost you set.

The reason I chose the HKS EVC IV over the AVC-R and the Profec A is because of the way it looks. I think the Greddy is the ugly duckling of the group and the AVC-R looks to ricey for me. The screen also takes a lot more space then the 1/4 DIN units. Useable Gauge space is a premium in 944's. As far as performance I think they all perform about the same. The gear and RPM based boost features of the AVC-R are neat, but I think the low, high, and scramble settings on the HKS can achieve the same results.

I have a Profec B and it works great. I've heard know some guys who have had Profec A's and AVC-R's who have gone to a Profec B because it was just as effective and they found it easier to set up. There was a good article in Sport Compact Car that compared various boost controllers. They installed the controllers on the same car and compared power & boost curves. The Profec B fared best out of the bunch. The interesting thing was how well a manual controller did. I'n some cases it was better than the electronic controller and in all cases it was not signifigantly worse. I had a manual controller on my car before the Profec B and I can honestly say that other than having the ability to set my boost from inside the car there really isn't that signifigant of difference. I suggest saving your money getting something else that will give a more noticeable improvement in performance. Just my $0.02

Question

Do you recall what issue the EBC comparisons appeared in?

It was a couple of months ago. I freaking had it and then lost it. I really want it back so I could read it again now that Im seriously weighing my options and am going to buy one within a month or two.
As I remember reading the ones that did well were the Blitz, AVCR, Profec B, Manual, and I think the EVC IV (silver ed.)
They really seemed to like the Blitz, but the profec b is the most cost effective..(unless you are buying used!)

I remember reading that issue and thinking the comparison was lame. I don't remember why I thought that. I personally can't stand that mag or their sister publication European Car. Over the years I have noticed a trend in them, they only write stories only about their advertisers and never have anything bad to say about the product with the fanciest ad. Any mag that says the Passport 8500 is better then the V1 is nuts IMHO.

I noticed a big saftey difference when changing from a manual boost controller to electronic controller (Profec B). I noticed the Profec B will not spike what so ever and do what ever it can to keep the boost right where you have it set. On the other hand the manual boost controller I had (Huntley Racing) boost spiked all the time. I could be in 2nd gear getting 14 pounds while in 4th I was getting 18-19psi YIKES!! I love the profec b for its simplicty as well as the extra saftey towards boost spikes. I did notice the Profec B does hold boost a little longer than the manual.
