Post "M474" Suspension Option

Is anyone familiar with this option code? What did it consist of, and how does it compare to the M030 package.

Thanks.

My 951 had it too. I have completely redone my my suspension, and the only thing I found that was not "normal" was that it has 195lb springs.

Perry,

No Konis? Stock (S/Turbo) swaybars?

Also, how could you tell the springs were 195#?

I would be interested in hearing more about this. Perry- how did you find out that the springs were 195lb? Also, were the shocks Koni's, or adjustable, etc? Any info would be appreciated...

I've no idea on whether spring rate is part of M474 but M474 should be Koni Sport Shocks (i.e. Koni Yellows).

M474 Sport Koni dampers
part no. 95134303106, 95134303206 rebound adjustable
M030 Koni dampers
part no. 95134303132, 95134303232 (rebound, height adjustable, stiffer valving)

The M474's were the same stiffness on full hard as the M030 on full soft

I have the M474 suspension sitting in my garage (not in the car), and sure enough they are the Koni sports. The sway bars, brakes, etc are the same as the standard 951.

I am curious are the struts rebuildable? If so where would I send them?

You should be able to do it yourself with one of the Koni rebuild/upgrade cartridges from Paragon. You remove the old innards and drill a hole in the bottom and bolt a new cartridge in that's adjustable in the car.

How about these PN's:

951.343.031.07 & 951.333.032.01?

Anybody have these #'s?

I have a similar but different part number from any shown - 951 343 031 02 . Bought the strut assembly off e-bay for practically nothing hoping to find a mate. Any ideas what it is or where to look? Thanks

Ian - All Koni's can be rebuilt. Send them back to Koni and you can have them rebuilt as dual externally adjustables for both compression and rebound. While you're at it, they can revalve them to match any given spring rate. I forget the name of the place that does the rebuild for Koni but I'm sure someone on the boards does. It's something like Service Master in Ohio.

There was a post about 4 months ago on the stock spring designation by color. I searched and searched and could not find it.

Each spring had a colored dot(s) on them indicating spring stiffness. Mine have a single red dot on them. IIRC.. it was something like this

1 Red - 195lb
2 Red - 185lb
1 White - 175
2 White - 165lb
1 Yellow - 155lb
2 Yellow - 145lb

There were some blue dot spring, and IIRC, they were the progressive 175lb's. I remember the 1 red dot being 195lb, because that afternoon, I started putting the engine bay back together and I had to move my suspension. I saw the dots, and later that night I saw the post.

I did not have adjustible struts in the car when I got it. They were shot, so I think they were the origionals. I do have the M474 option code right in the back of the car.

I don't know either.

The factory manuals (US models) says that the M474 sport shock option uses stock springs and Koni yellow rebound-adjustable, non-height adjustable struts with stock front springs. It goes on to say that the M030 Koni height-adjustable struts are "harder rebound than M474 sports shock absorber even at the basic setting"

The 86-88 turbo springs are nominal 21.8 N/mm(125 lb/inch) constant-rate springs (951 343 531 01). There are three groups:

Group 1: 1 yellow dot 3034-3118 N at 251 mm height (120 to 123 lb/in)

Group 2: 2 yellow dots 3118-3202 N at 251 mm height (123 to 127 lb/in)

Group 3: 3 yellow dots 3202-3286 N at 251 mm height (127 to 130 lb/in)

Turbo M030 springs are marked with either 1 or 2 white dots and 1 yellow dot (to end of '89, 944 343 531 01) or grey dots ('90 on, 951 343 531 03). M030 springs are all nominal 160 lb/in.

Other springs markings:

944 / 924S with standard and sport shocks (477 411 105 Q): one, two or three blue dots, 125 lb/in nominal, 4% change per group (ie. 1 dot 120-123, 2 dots 123-127, 3 dots 127-130 lb/in)

924S and 944 with M030 to end of MY86 (477 411 105 G): 1, 2 or 3 red dots, 137 lb/in nominal, 4% per dot

944 as of MY87 with M030 (Koni shocks) (944 343 531 00): 1 or 2 white with 1 blue dot, variable rate, 160 lb/in nominal spring rate, 4% per white dot

944S with standard shock absorber (unpress.)(951 343 531 00): 1, 2 or 3 white dots, 125 lb/in nominal, 4% per dot

944S with sport shock absorbers (gas filled) (951 343 531 01): 1, 2 or 3 yellow dots, 125 lb/in nominal, 4% per dot (also stock turbo springs)

944S2 with standard shock absorbers (951 343 531 02): 1, 2 or 3 purple dots, 136 lb/in nominal, 4% per dot

944S2 with sport shock absorbers up to MY'89 (951 343 531 03): 1, 2 or 3 turquoise dots, 136 lb/in nominal, 4% per dot (note: shorter than standard springs)

944S2 with sport running gear (M030)(944 343 531 01): 1 or 2 white with 1 yellow dot, variable rate, 160 lb/in nominal spring rate, 4% per white dot

944S2 with turbo running gear tuning (M031 / as of MY'90) (944 343 531 04): 1, 2 or 3 beige dots, 160 lb/in nominal spring rate, 4% per dot

I don't know where all these high spring rates that people talk about come from. Trouble with the Metric system? A better source of information than the factory manuals? Or (my pet theory,) do people need to believe the factory suspension on this car is macho stiff?

My 85.5 NA has a 456 option which is "sport shocks and stabilizer bars". Is that the pre-M030 equivilant for my year?
