I am in the process of putting a Lindsey Stage II MAF on my car right now... (um, my apologies to John, as I was going to go with your Stage I kit, but I got a VERY good deal on the MAF and the guy I bought it from will be calling you in the next week to order a Stage I instead).

Anyway, the AFM is off the car now and can be boxed up and shipped out tomorrow, so if you want it, let me know. $85, and you ship me your old one sound fair? I want a connector off of a dead afm to use to wire up the new MAF.

Regards,

m42racer,

Our views on things may not match, but that's what make discussions more interesting. I'm sure we'll find somehing to discuss, perhaps 930 & BMW? I understand you like both of them, same here .
Full EFI systems have been available for a long time. I personally have experience with Motec, DTA and now working on PP. I doubt they'll put MAF or MAP in the background. Standalone EFI have issues like any product out there...

sh944,
Glad you got a good deal on something you want. Feel free to contact me if there is anything I can help you with.

sh944,

If you work out a deal on the AFM with Jaak. You might want him to send you the connector off of his olf AFM not the whole unit. It'll save him some shipping cost...

Then what will we talk about?

It has been available through SFR for years now. First it was the TEC-II and now we offer a complete bolt-on TEC3 stand alone system. Just pull it out of the box and install it. It can also be used with MAF or MAP. It comes with a custon built wiring harness, brackets, sensors, etc.......It has direct fire ignition, datalogging and an auto-tune feature along with so much other stuff it would take days to list it all. We can also set-up Motec and AEM stand alone systems so they bolt-on to the 951. BTW, I have been running stand alone on my car since 1998.

Exclamation

sh944, pk951 ... or others. If you have a AFM for sale please e-mail me at jaakl@rogers.com If you want my old one thats no problem as I will ship it back to you whole. Shipping cost is no problem as I was willing to pay over $700 CDN for a new one anyway.

I will reply with my address and payment options. I prefer to pay by bank daft in USD (unless you are a vendor and I can call to CC info).

My first question still stands ... what gains can I get by upgrading to a MAF or MAP with a stock set-up? If my turbo does go in the near future I probably will upgrade. I have not been able to get the performance enhancements with a MAF from any web site I have visited. What are the gains to be had? I did see from the Guru site what the MAP offers.
I have a thirst for knowledge and like to have as much info as possible before I leap into any mods. The car will not be raced but if I can get that little bit extra out of the better. The car was put on the road in November 1985 by a famous millionaire who kept it for 2 years.

I do find this forum to be very educational and has helped me in some of my problems in the past.

Well, if we are now going to discuss EFI systems, and compare .....

I'm not going there. I'm exhausted from just the MAF/MAP sensors.

Talking

Folks ... installed the AFM from Scott this evening and boy what a difference it makes! The car really moves and has become very responsive.

The cold start/run stumble has disappeared and idle has smoothed out. The weather changed from dry to thunderstorm and no change in performance other than the tires spinning in the wet!!!

It seems the old one was different internally then the newer one; the barn door was on a slant.

Another observation is the temperature gauge is running 1 mark cooler. This ca has always run at the third mark most of the time. This time it stayed at the second mark and did not raise when I idled for about 10 minutes. This would cause the temp to raise in the past.

Scott ... thanks again. The socket will be mailed out tomorrow morning as Canada post is delaying their strike!

Talking

MAP of MAF ... talking to my garage today, a wrench had discussed how their "88 951 raced on the weekend. Saturday they had a DNF as the intercooler pipe blew off the turbo and they soon exited the race. If they had a MAP according to the wrench, they would still be able to keep running and finish the race.

By the way, on Sundays race the started last and finished up first! Rob Pacione, #64 has come in first place in the last 3 weekend races!

Oh yes, they would have finished the race! What would happen to the turbo spinning freely as no boost is being made and nothing to control the wastegate. Or were they planning to have the WG open under backpressure, which causes detonation.

I don't know much about the "garage" you are talking to. However, since they didn't diagnose a bad AFM on your car for a long time, and this... I would start looking for a new shop...

AFAIK (and I could be waaaay wrong!), yes, the air flow is higher between different turbos at the same 15psi but isn't that what the chips are for? The fuel map that the chips put out is matched to the turbo and the volume of air that it is capable of flowing at the various pressures.

Therefore, I assume that when you change turbo, you change / upgrade the chips for different fuel requirements; the MAP, once set, doesn't have to "compensate" for anything.
