by j boot is very far gone, as is my airbox, looking for ideas about replacement
so my j boot is cracked to hell, and so is my airbox. i would rather not have to buy a j boot because its expesive if there is something else on the market. i was looking at the lindsey stuff, but it doesnt look like you can use their cool tube that relocates the filter and adds a cone filter with out using the hard pipes as well. thats unfortunate becasue that would solve both problems... has anybody tried this, am i wrong? any other ideas that get rid of the j boot in favor of something more durable? anyways, thanks in advance for the help!
take care,

Brian, I just replaced my j-boot with an OEM replacement, and it was a little pricey (~$85 or so). However, the original lasted 16 years, so I can't complain about durability.
For what it's worth, I also just added a cone-style air filter using a modified aluminum adapter for the AFM, but it puts it in front of the radiator. I know some don't like that set-up, but so far I'm happy with the result.
Hopefully someone will come up with an alternative you can consider as well.

doesn't the car loose hp if the cone is inside the eng compartment due to a hotter air intake? i had this set up, but after reading so much bout cold air intake i decided to go with the stock configuration.
brian, just a thought, if you just need something to work for the moment till you get a decent alternative, try using silicone gasket around the cracks, if it's not too much separated. if it's all over the place in the boot it'll work, the stuff is strong enough. i used " right stuff" it came in a preassrized container, like cheeze whiz. the old boot preety much had it on mine so i cleaned it real good, sanded it a bit to roughen it up a bit, then i siliconed the heck out of it. and made it look good by cleaning up and forning the silicone evenly. it's messy. end result, it work real well till i got a usedone from a buddy that was just throwing extra stuff away.
good luck

i have the cone filter adapter that is made from a supra, two holes didn't quite match the afm but i just drilled it and fabed a gasket and siliconed it for good measure and no problem.
but took it off and have no use for it. make an offer if you want it.

"doesn't the car loose hp if the cone is inside the eng compartment due to a hotter air intake?"
Perhaps in stop & go traffic on a hot day. The only documented case I've found was with a MAF-1 kit that put the air-cleaner directly behind the radiator. The guy mentioned the car was a monster compared to stock (about 260rwp@18psi), but whenever the second cooling fan kicked on in stop & go traffic, the car would have a minor stumble at idle. I suspect this has more to do with turbulent air blowing across the MAF than an air-temp issue though. He solved the problem by building a plate in front of the air-cleaner to block the fans from blowing directly on it.
Anyway, at 15mph and above, there's enough turbulence and swirl in the engine-compartment that an exposed k&N would be sucking up air at outside ambient temperatures anyway.

Ambient was 76F according to the bank on the way. See if you can guess where the stop lights are and when I hit traffic. On hot days while sitting, I have seen the temp break 150F. Continuous running at 60+mph usually brings down the air intake temp within 10 degrees of ambient.

You can almost kill the engine at idle with a good burst of air across the filter.

I had a stock airbox with a K&N in it and swapped to a cone which bolt on to the AFM with an adaptor. Dont think there was any real extra power but throttle response improved and I get a nice sound from it!
