HAHAHAHAHAHAHA im with that last example!!! You know what, i learned on my friend's VW, but i really didnt have a grasp on it. I bought the S2 with only having driven manual 5 times. My father taught me to drive a manual shifting between 3,4, and 5th gears on the highway driving it home. I found the clutch so heavy on the S2 it made it easy. I could really feel what was going on. Basically he forced one thing- BE SMOOTH. I have it ingrained in my head that when you switch in any direction you should feel nothing. If you do, its no good.

Yeah if someone has a beater manual car they can loan u, that would be good. Go to a parking lot so can practice first gear. I learned on a Fiat, remember those? My cousin was here from Italy at the time. He told me that the clutch and shifter are like connected. YOU PUSH ONE MOVE THE OTHER. I still remember what he said and that was like25 years ago. It worked for me I am sure it will work for her.

Come on guys!

Arent we just a little more trusting of our girlfriends?
The wear on the clutch isnt gonna be more than just a few peels outs (not that you can that in 951s).
I think the 951 has a pretty easy clutch.

Hell, I'm taking my gf to the next autocross, and I'm gonna let her drive!

oh -i'm WAY trusting of her - its just that SHE doesn't want to do anything that she thinks will hurt the 951. to tell the truth, i'm not wild about the bucking, EXCESSIVE clutch wear, etc. that is associated with teaching someone to drive a clutch. its not that its not possible...just not desired!

Get a $1000 early-mid 90s civic or corolla (very easy clutches), which you can then sell a month later for about what you paid for it.
I know what she means about the clutch though. When I go from driving my 951 for a while, to driving my RSX, I slam the clutch in, because it has no resistance compared to the 951.

The best way to learn to drive a manual is to buy one. Then you've got no choice. I taught my partner on my n/a b/c she was getting a new Contour 5-speed. One day was all it took. Now she tools around in the Contour with absolutely no problems. Haven't had any clutch problems in either car (5 years and counting!). Just buy the 996 and enjoy it!
