increasing hp
my car is bone stock
im thinking of doing some proformance mods.
what would be some first steps - not to deep on the pockets and not something that will harm my car.
your advice would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

I disagree. You are going to replace that k26/6 in the future. The K26/8 isn't that much better. As for the hardened 1/2 gears of the turbo s, you can get a re manned tranny from Mr. Garrity Repta for much less than the difference of the two cars.
I would start out by making sure your blow off valve isn't torn (lot's of BOV talk lately). I would replace your plug wires. Look into a camshaft from Jon Millege engineering. www.jmengines.com .
On limited funds.......I would contact modern performance and buy one of their MAF's. They are $575 and are made by ProFLow. They're the same thing Autothority sells for $1500.
I too, am operating on limited funds. Im an 18 year old kid about to leave for school out of state, way out of state.

TurboSes are really nice cars and have great performance if you keep them stock. However, if you plan on upgrading your 951, then for the price differential between a Turbo and TurboS, you can have an upgraded Turbo that outperforms a TurboS.
As for upgrades, you have to really look inside and be honest with yourself. How much power is enough and where will you stop?
If up to 350rwhp is OK, then go with the gradual bolt-ons route with K&N, chips, boost-controller, cat-bypass, MAF/ARC2/ARM1, turbo-upgrade, & wastegate (in that order). This will ultimately max out at 300-350rwhp for about $5k-8k.
If you want more, then you want to start with ripping out the stock computers and going with an aftermarket EFI system like SDS/Electromotive/Motec/Wolf/Haltech, etc. With these systems and a turbo-upgrade, you power will start at 350rwhp and go on up from there.

Guess you haven't driven an "S" Luke. Its ok - when you do you'll know why they are collector's items.
Anyway, to respond to the original post, try some chips from a good tuner first. I'd go with the Weltmeister's. That should get you headed in the right direction.

I agree with Danno.
And I think Turbo s' are collector's item when they are stock.
No I haven't driven an "s". I am sure your car is very nice.
It is very difficult to find a stock 944 in any form. After 13 years any car is going to need just as much work as a 15 year old car to bring it back up to Spec anyway .
Enjoy your car.

While I would heartily encourage you to go the SDS route as opposed to the bolt-on MAF/ARC/chips route even if you're not shooting for huge hp, Danno has used the operative phrase for that procedure. "Ripping out". Oh my god, you should see the passenger-side floor in my car right now,

My car was the same, a mess, but now it's all cleaned up. Except for the SDS LCD programmer that's sitting on the seat (can be unplugged) you can't tell it's using an aftermarket EFI.

First thing to do is install a set of chips. These really help performance and I see them all the time on ebay now. Huntley Racing and AutoThority make a good set I think. These chips add as much as 45HP.

According to a prior employee of Huntley, their chips are actually duplicated autothority chips. You may want to check some dyno charts of Autothority chips. The long and the short of it (according to numerous tuners) is basically that the midrange is fattened too much and the timing is too far advanced for a standard car running 14.7 psi. Weltmesiter's (from what I have heard agian from numerous sources...lol) are supposed to be the best generic chip. In other words they're not perfect but the best you can get short of semi-custom (smaller performance shop).

Yep I'm fully aware that Huntley Chips are a modified AutoThority set, it's even still in the source code if you have a EPROM programer to check it with (I do). However the AutoThority set still has overboost protection, Huntley removed this feature in their modifed AutoThority set for people like us who like to run extreme amounts of boost. I have Huntley chips and have had nothing but good luck with them in my car.

First and foremost would be to make sure that that car has good wires, fuel lines, Blow off valve and VACUME LINES/HOSES. I have seen many people that have modified their cars and found themselves stuck waiting for some hose that failed due to pressure or whatever. After you know everything is in good shape, GO LEARN HOW TO DRIVE IT!!!! I can beat almost all cars on the road (on the straights or in the turns) just because I spent the time learning how to properly drive the car. I too got a garaged 87 951 with 48k and spent the next 4 months learning how the car works. it is different from my N/A.
Another thought, you should look at it this way... you just got the car. Drive it until you start to feel it is an average car. THEN modify it. you will enjoy the car stock this way and when you modify it you will still enjoy it.... just a though, of course!
