TOWING MY 951 - X POST
I posted this in the general 924/944/968 forum, but wanted as many opinions/experiences as possible.
I searched this topic and came up with several threads, but nothing recent. I am wanting to tow my 951 on a U-Haul tow dolly about 250 miles from Vegas to east of LA area of California. My Cherokee should be up to the task, as it will pull a house down. What is all of the talk of ruining transmissions by not disconnecting the CV axles? I read several stories of people towing with this setup, but some mentioned that without the axles removed it may ruin the tranny. I will be limited to 55 mph (occasionally up to 65 mph downhill) due to California's retarded lower speed limits if you are towing. Thanks in advance for your advice, comments, and experiences. I am wanting to do it this weekend. Thanks.

I agree with Lart. Go with the auto transport. It's a little more money but probably a lot safer than the dolly. I use the auto transport to pull my race car on a regular basis. It's an easy tow. Btw, they have two different versions, the older version (45mph speed limit) that is painted orange and can be in pretty rough shape, and the newer version (55mph) which is not painted. The newer version has a significantly wider wheel track and can't hurt to have a spotter to help when loading (it's not hard to slip a tire off on the inside.)

If you have a manual transmission (which you do if it's a 951), you won't hurt it at all; just make sure the car is out of gear. I did this research before moving mine. Towed it from IL to MI, then from MI to Toronto with no issues at all. Now getting it on the dolly is another issue, lol! I agree with Lart, UHaul will not rent you a dolly if they know it is for a Porsche. I would use the auto transport if I had a tow vehicle up to the task (added weight).

If you're worried about the transaxle why not put the rear wheels on the dolly?
I always use the auto transport and tell them I tow the 951, never had any issures with that.

haha you rookies, here is the master's tip, the dolly with a tow ball in the center will destroy your front bumper and crack the fog lights, so no dolly with towing ball. Now the auto transport has an issue too, when you load the car, the front bumper lip or batwing if you have one, will get stuck in the trailer's edge, the solution cut 4 pieces of 2x4 about a foot long each and lay 2 on each side where the tires rest by doing this you will increase the height by 2 inches avoiding that the car get's stuck and break your front bumper and fog lights or batwing.

I agree with Lart, using 2x4's to help with clearance up front on the auto transport is a good idea. On a similar note but different vehicle, I had to always use 2x4's to help my Starion clear the angle on the tow dolly or else the front spoiler would detach itself from the car.
