Broken CV axle.

I had the same problem with the cheap axles from 944online... one of them only lasted about a week. Replaced it with the 951 part number axle from pelican (~$250 each) and filled my mount with poly, no problems since. Also, you definitely don't need to pull the trans to replace the mount, just remove the passenger side rear wheel and slide the crossmember out through the wheel well.

You don't really have to take it out to do the job. I did the $20 poly fill method with just lowering the tranny on a jack, that gave me enough room to jimmy the cross brace out and R&R the mount.

Pics? Also be honest, is this happening when you're racing someone off at the lights? 5000rpm and drop the clutch will hurt all trans parts.

Joint broke not the cheese heads.
I wasn't beating on it at all this time. First time it broke I was driving like an idiot though.
Thanks for the heads up on the trans mount fix. What kind of poly do I fill the gaps with and where do I get it. I will also look into getting the axles from Pelican. Do you have to send in a core? Or are the $250 ones new replacement not rebuilds?

I had the GKN Motorsport Axles (no longer available). These were made by GKN and were knock offs of a cup car axle. They had custom cv joints and hollow axles.
I bought the set and installed them in 2006.
In July 2011, in a Friday practice for a big POC 4 hour enduro, I broke an axle. Not the CV joint. I literally snapped the axle in 2 pieces.
Now in a panic for the race, I decide to call Worldpac and buy 2 brand new GKN 951 axle assemblies (new in box with "made in Germany" stickers). I figured that since I broke 1 motorsport axle, the other wasn't far behind since it's been to the same party....
I install both at the track. Do a 7 lap practice before the race. Due to the wait for the new axles, I didn't qualify for the race. I start dead last. My spotter gives me the "jump" on the green.... :-)
By lap 3, I've passed over 1/2 of the field of 40 cars (this is in the Red run group in the POC).
Remember... this is a 4 hour enduro race that cost about $1,000 just to enter.
By lap 5, I feel a severe vibration under throttle.
I radio in the problem, and pit.
My crew looks under the rear of the car and sees that both inner CV boots are basically missing/shredded.
I limp back to our pit area.
I get out and look under the rear of the car and I see CV joint ***** on the ground.
Yeah.... 13 laps, both cv cages broken, both cv boots gone, and 1 cv joint dropped all ***** on the ground.
That's my recent experience with brand new German GKN axle assemblies.
2.5 mile track x 13 laps... so call it 32 miles to complete failure of 2 cv joints.

TonyG - do you have a solid/semi solid transmission mount, or the standard one? I broke both my axle assemblies (that i got from 944online) at the cv joints last year. Over the winter, I filled the tranmission mount with epoxy (using the method described in the thread about the urethane filler). I haven't had a problem since.

When we sent sample GKN axles (current new ones) to our axle builder for measurement purposes, we were told they look like the parts they see from axles made in China. Maybe some of the parts are from Germany Tony.. Here is the USA, I believe only 70% (parts or labor combo some how) of the items needs to be made in the USA to say Made in the USA.

I used window weld. I took out my stock mount, and got a used good mount and filled it with window weld. It worked out so far. I had the window weld laying around from another project. The solid mount or brace will create a ton of vibrations.
Do the semi solid mount or fill your stock one.

And yes the trans can move side to side, but it's not much and it's far less than I can slide the axles side to side, thus I don't see how a little lateral trans movement could possibly cause excess cv joint side loading (or any cv joint side loading at all....).

Tony, do you still have the GKN Motorsport CVs sitting around? Maybe take them apart and compare those internals to the new GKNs on the market. It'd be interesting to see what the differences are between the two.

I ordered the GKN CVs last night from Pelican but I was confused about the part number as my car is an 86. So I called Pelican and the sales rep set me up with these.

I was concerned because there seems to be a difference between the 86 and 87 and later models. Is that right?
