Hi All
Anyone with knowledge on the A/C compressors ??
Something is very strange ... The car starts up and the A/C compressor will only spin in short little spurts ....
When I take off the Alternator-A/C belt, the A/C compressor will spin in my hand when I rotate it but there is some slight resistance....
I don't have a reference, as to how easlly it should spin, i.e. it doesn't spin as easliy as the Alternator .... Maybe the clutch is engaged and the compressor seized?
Anyone have this happen to them ?
BTW the car has been sitting for over 6 yrs+
But the A/C did work fine before the inactivity, and yes the A/C switch is off![Confused](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/confused.gif)
Thanks in advance
Kind regards
Ed

May have rust on the plate and clutch making it be engaged. or the bearing is gone making the clutch tight against the plate
If the switch was on I would say it is low on freon kicking the clutch in and out.

I tested the schrader valve, and freon with oil shot out, so the system has something in it ...
I am assuming, that even though the pulley is spinning when I turn it by hand, it doesn't mean that the compressor isn't seized ... It may be only semi seized ??
![Confused](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/confused.gif)
When it on the car and the engine is running it does a 1/4 of a turn and then it stays stationary ... (while the engine is still running )
![Confused](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/confused.gif)
WTF do I know ??
Thanks for your help
Ed
Yes She's ALIVE She's ALIVE !
Actually she's been alive for about a month+ but there were some hurdles to overcome. If not for Tom God olny knows where I would be .....

Looks like I am going to do the lazy *** thing and just put a short belt on temporarily until I can get the compressor sorted out ... I still cant figure out what happened here ?? When a A/C compressor seizes, does it still spin when you turn it by hand ?
Best regards
Ed

Sounds like your close, Ed! When you say "does it spin".... Without the AC clutch engaged, the pulley should spin freely. With it engaged, there should be substantial resistance. In other words, a seized compressor without the clutch engaged will still spin easily.
Put a gauge on it and see what the pressure is. I'm betting a little refrigerant will bring it all back to life.

Well I want to shoot a video but my illustrious son left the camera at his friends house ...

As the engine is idling, the the compressor spins a 1/4 of a turn, then the belt just slides over the pulley, then a 1/4 of a turn again, thereby causing it to give off little black floating soot .... The new Porsche belt is toast

I assume, it turns in my hand with some resistance ( not like a free spinning alternator, but when it is asked to spin fast it must lock up ? I must assume that the clutch is engaged ( even though it shouldn't be ( no A/C switch on) So there is some seized part in the compressor that is causing the lock up ?
![Confused](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/confused.gif)
I put on the shorter belt ( crank to alternator ) and will run like that just to keep things moving .... I would like to get this car on the road sometime before the decade is out

Ouch! The soot is indicating seizure. Its probably time for a reman compressor assy down the road, but it sounds like getting the car on the road and enjoying it for a while would be first. (Its hard to spend ANOTHER batch of cash on something that hasn't brought much pleasure, lately)
Its time for some pics and updates!

I saw a number of these compressors, ranging in cost from 480- 700 for a brand new Denso compressor I saw some that said Denso design but said Reman ( those were cheaper... What are Reman's ?
Thanks bud

Your car has been sitting for a long time. It's possible that refrigerant has leaked out making the system low. Before you start throwing expensive parts at it put a set of A/C gauges on it and see where it's at. Low refrigerant will cause the compressor to short cycle.

and maybe he will come over and check it out with his gauge set

What has me stumped, is you the pulley just wouldn't just spin freely ?? ( well at least freely enough where it wouldn't toast a new belt....
![Confused](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/confused.gif)
I am able to turn it by hand ?
Thanks

With the belt off the outer pulley should turn very free unless the bearing is bad. the center of the compressor is what is truning the guts , it should not turn unless the clutch is engaged, however you should be able to turn it when engaged or not engaged with some resistance, If the belt pulley is what is locking up and the center is stationary then the bearing is bad , the bearing can be bought at most parts places and changed easily. best to take it out to make sure you get the correct bearing have found that there are 2 different ones.

Hey Ed do you want my old one? Nothing wrong with it I bought a new one. It just needs to be cleaned.
I'm never going to use it.
You can have it just needs polishing.....your pretty good at shining things up![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
My new one is from Zims. Good price if you want new.
