INTERPRETING PET CODES/ PART NUMBERS
I have a question about how to interpret part numbers in PET. I have noticed that for several items multiple part numbers are listed depending on some type of engine or chassis code.
For example, for the oil pan/oil sump:
Use:
944.101.201.11 M44.40/51
if >> 45H 01414
otherwise use:
944.101.201.14 M44.40/51
if 45H 01415 >>
My question is what does the "45H 01414" refer to and where can I find this code on my car? Also, what is the sequence (letters and numbers) so that I can figure out if I am "before" or "after" the change in parts?

This number is the engine serial number.
In your example, the 45H sequence refers to an 87 944T motor, serials 00000-10000.
The oil pan changed mid-production, so to replace the exact pan engines up to 45H 01414 (>>45H 01414) have one pan, and those after (45H 01414>>) have a different pan.
You can find the serial number adjacent to the number 4 cylinder at the right rear of the block.
