why not diy? 3 reasons - 1) the pistons aren't with me and more importantly 2) according to lindsey, the fly-cutting also makes the engine no longer an interference engine (aka valves can't collide with pistons). 3) i trust myself to do a lot, but that's one thing i'm a tad scared to diy.

oh, matt - they are coating them, not sure w/ what but i trust their work

Hello all:
First time on the list, however I have been lurking for a l..o..n..g time. I get my "card" next week. Anyway, as my sig suggests, I have had slight engine problems. I am in the process of aquiring a new block and would like to bore it, stroke it or something. I would just like to have something more than a 2.5. Thinking of Auto-X and maybe the occasional trip to Mid-Ohio. I am going to rebuild it myself with ordered components, contracting out the machine work. I'm also planning to EFI it with a nice turbo. I.E... a full workup over the next 8 months. I just need a good game plan to balance keeping it legal for the track and stomping anything on the street. (Alan C. , Perry....:-)) Suggestions? The world is the limit... within reason.

Hi Chris and all;
I had the second 2.8 Andial built and put about 10K track miles and some street miles before I sold it. If anyone knows the limitation of a 2.8 it's Chris C. I've raced against Chris over the years and must say there is no substitute for his experience that he's gained racing 951's. My motor ran Mahle 8.2 C/R, Carillo rods Porsche Motorsport chips (Escort) fast, real fast, and head gasket. What I liked was the torque coming out of the corners. We used a 3:89 ring and pinon which worked great both on the track and the street. What I didn't like was being first to do a lot of R&D on head gasket sealing.
If I had to do it over I go with a 2.8 stroker and not bore the cylinders. Keep boost below 1 bar and enjoy the car.

What king of R&D did you made and what did you find out? My car never had head gasket Problems for 12 years 140000 km and boost up to 25 PSI. why other have so many problems with the head gasket?

just curius if others have the same "good" experience?

Konstaintin,
I don't know what modification you have made if any, but you are lucky not to have a head gasket fail on a modified engine especially if it is tracked.
We tested Non-stretch head bolds, stretch head bolts, "O" ringing the head, water injection, motorsports injectors 72lb. extrude honing and many different chip combination. Most head gasket failures are from detonation, however we found on the dyno that the head would lift at 1.55bar in a highly modified engine.
Most 2.5 engines actually have a little less than the 8.0 c/r advertised giving them a margin of safety to run high boost. The early Mahle pistons for the 2.8 gave a c/r of 8.2 which produced much higher cylinder pressure (and more power)and heat. There has been a lot of development since the early 90's but most I've seen is after market hype to sell snake oil.

I run 99 Euro octane. this is like 94 US octane.
The temp was cold(15 degree celsius) and this was on the Autobahn.. I think if you take the timing back in high RPM you can run a lot of boost if the engine is not very hot and teh fuel is ok. I had enough fuiel in the engine maybe a little too rich according to the team owner of the Porsche Michelin Supercup winner. I think most of you run to much advance at high rpm and the gas is not that good as in europe.
i tried even our lowest 91 octane (tha must be 87 in USA) and I had no problems tin 15 PSI.
about 1.3 bar should be very safe with proper fuel and timing even on a stock gaket. My head gasket was stock too. Now I put a wide fire one. I will see if it is better;-)
