Post starting to shop

I am starting to shop for a 944 turbo to use as a daily driver. My current plan is to keep the cost down to $8k or below. Is this possible or should I be looking at NA 944's? I know very little about these cars, so can anyone direct me to some sources to read about the problems and/or short comings of these cars and what to look for when purchasing. Thanks for any suggestions or comments you can offer.

My opinion only...
You can buy a very nice na 944 for $8k, or a "work in progress" 951 for the same amount. This is based on $6k for the car and $2k in make ready (new belts, water pump, etc...). If you go for the na 944, you should have a trouble free car that you can drive everyday. If you go for the "work in progress" 951, then you'll likely be disappointed. I'd go for the na 944, or even a 924S and pocket the cash. Then, when you want to impress, you've always got the 993 in the garage.

Very sound reasoning. Thanks. The question then becomes were do I become educated on the 944?

I would suggest reading through the posts in the 944 forum. The motors in the 944 and 951 are solid as long as they are maintained. If there is one glaring thing that these cars are known for it is eating balljoints. They aren't cheap and seem to fail fairly easily. Most other issues with the car are normal maintenance like water pump and timing belts. But anyone who has maintained there cars properly has changed those when it was necessary.

Another suggestion could bea a 944S with the bigger motor and the 951 body. All the great looks of a 951 without the added power and maintenance concerns.

Hope this helps good luck in your quest.

Well, if you eant a variety of opinions, you've come to the right place.
You could also find a nice 951 for $6000.00 and drive it every day for two years with only one very accessible coolant hose needing repalacement.
With the 951 you've got asthetics and performance.

Pardon? You'll have to expand on this a little, please.
