Rothman's Turbo Cup
While helping my friend locate a 951, I stumbled upon this :
<a href="http://www.globemegawheels.com/master/cgi-bin/mw_gensearchdetails.asp?id=289265" target="_blank">Rothman's Turbo Cup 944 Turbo</a>
I wasn't aware they made street versions of this car? I thought there were 36 made for the Cup races (all with Rothmans livery), but this ad claims it was one of 38 made for the street and never raced?
Anyone know the history of this specific model? What kind of engine changes, etc? Thanks.

I'm not really sure, although I do know that it was a Canada-only racing series. If you want to know details on the series, call MCL in Vancouver, and as for John the service manager. (604-736-7911) He actually raced in the Rothmans series, so he'd know all the details.
As far as changes over the standard turbo, I do know that those phone-dial wheels are made of magnesium and are extremely light and valuable. The cars used upgraded swaybars, and a Bilstein coilover suspension, with rear torsion bars and coilover "helper" springs. The motor was basically stock Turbo S. The clutch was upgraded, as were the DME and KLR computers.

Wasn't it a sophisticated system involving seat of the pants sensors along with different pressure applied to the throttle or brake pedal in conjunction with the steering input?

Hi guys,
I have seen the car a few times. It is in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Norden, the Volkswagon/Porsche dealership.
It is too bad it has been left to the elements.
i.e. the paint is oranged, the wheels have discoloured to a yelloy white.
It is basic, no carpet, radio, etc. The hood has snap rings and if I recall roll bar and race seats. The milage is low though.
It has been there going on two years I think. I does sit in the snow and cold as well.
I am fussy, but would only give it a 6 out of 10 and that's because it is unique.
Randy the dealership sales guy did have a very nice 1990 944 Turbo, Navy & linen, low mileage but it has gone to BC now.

Not the same series but there ae a few Playboy Cup Cars floating around. There is a white one in Cincinnati which was never raced. Matter cage etc. Very nice car. Every once in a while the owner thinks he wants to sell it and then doesn't. I've never caught him on a day when he wants to sell.

I was told by Randy, this car was a spare and it was not raced as the series was finished or canceled thus it was not used. Forgot to mention this.
Lastly, many Canadian cars are stored for extended periods of time due to the weather so Canadian cars usually have less milage on them then say a car from California that is driven day in and day out.
It is currently minus 20 C or minus 5 F here in Calgary with ice and snow. My car is tucked in.

Hey Doug. Nice to see a fellow Calgarian here!
Is that avatar a pic of your car? I've seen it before in town I think, I noticed it because it had the 968 style spoiler on the trunk. Nice!

Hi Guys, I'm new here, but a long time reader.
I own a 951 Cup car, from the French series, so maybe I can give some details:
The cars had 305 HP and 410 Nm, via a modified DME and KLR. The differences were:
Max RPM 6700
magnesium sump,
Magnesium inlet manifold,
90W alternator,
stronger engine supports,
no power steering,
modified Turbo,
Bosch W 4 cc spark plugs,
no resistors in the fan circuit, meaning it goes full speed all the time,
Glued, riveted clutch disk,
modified gearbox coling,
stronger gearbox supports,
30 mm front anti roll bar, 21 mm rear,
helicoidal springs front and rear,
drilled front brake discs,
switchable ABS,
Pagid S-535 brake pads,
front brake cooling ducts in place of driving lights,
8 and 9X16 Magnesium phone dial wheels,
no sound deadening,
no rear seat back,
1 driver Recaro bucket, 1 std passenger seat,
no glove box,
no radio console,
no door pockets,
no climate control (...),
no lighting for engine compatment or glovebox,
manual windows,
no rear wiper,
no rear hatch release,
no inner fender liners, except RF for ABS circuit,
rolled lips on 4 fenders,
thinner windshield,
honeycomb sandwich front hood, aluminum prop,
shock tower brace,
reinforced front chassis rails,
36 Ah battery, with racing cut-off,
8 point Matter roll cage,
Empty (no fuel) weight 1160 Kgs, about2550 Lbs
There have been about 110-115 cars built all in all, including the first 220HP versions for 1986.
They are really efficient, and have been timed above 190 Mph by many different sources.
BTW the red one on the avatar is a CUP car belonging to a french owner.
Regards, GeorgeK

Hey Doug.
You must be talking about the "High Roller Club"... if so you must know Kulu?
If you're up for a quick winter meet, I'll be at Davenport tomorrow (thursday) getting my car dyno'd from 2pm-4pm. Getting my car and my cousin's SLK32 AMG dyno'd.
