Are you saying the chrome separator bar was upside down, didn't know that could be done.

Can you get in there with a camera and post some pictures for us?
Yea, I bet that was your first movie effort, huh? ...Bruce ;]

Yeah it could, and it stopped making the noise. However, the belt still walks. The pulleys are in the proper orientation and I don't see them move along with the belt at all.

I didn't even bother opening the cam housing up, I just bolted it on as it was. But is it possible for the pulley there to somehow be slightly warped? Think maybe the power steering pulley could have somehow been tightened down at an angle? Because it looks sort of uneven as it rotates.

Got some pictures.
While turning the motor over by hand I can't get it to walk. If I run the motor (which I really don't like doing) it walks like a dog. So do any of these look off to you guys?

Some of the rollers have a 'guide' shoulder on them. Bet one is on backwards. http://youtu.be/K8T1SPook_k

You forgot the nut on the t belt tensioner guard...not your problem, just saying. My waterpump bearing went out after 1,000 miles with new belts. That noise scared me but sounds like a bad bearing inside the motor.

That was my thoughts untill the pictures were posted the tennsioner one is on correct. This is a wild guess but if the belt was crooked from being boxed in a bind over a period of time would make it walk, it sounds like it is not just running to one side but he says walking which to me would be moving around on the pulley's. Stranger things have happened !

It appears that the belt is forward on the crank and rearward on the cam . check the tennsioner pulley make sure it hasn't failed and the tennsionser running crooked.

The noise was the water pump guard, after flipping it around it stopped completely.

And yeah, it doesn't just move up some.. it walks. Slides up and down like it was made to do that- but only when it runs.

There are no leaks coming from the cam housing and cylinder head, so I don't think they could be wrong. I'm really stumped on this one, even started thinking about taking it to a mechanic. Are there small things that could be forgotten in there that could do this? A washer or two maybe?

+1 on taking a closer look at the tensioner roller.

Also, are you sure you reinstalled the washer behind the timing gear on the crank?

I have had a brand new balance shaft pulley fail on me after about 200 miles on my NA. I heard a funny pop the car shuddered and then ran fine. But I was curious so I pulled the cover and the Balance shft belt was just laying across the front of the motor!

My point is that it might have been walking and I never noticed it?

I had a timing belt tensioner fail on a car I sold. Put new belts and idlers , tensioners on when it sold so the new owner wouldn't have to worry about it.. Called 2 hours later said car quit running , found the timing belt stripped and tensioner locked up tight. Luckily onwer was a car guy and understood .

Yeah I'm pretty sure it's on there, I get a lot of oil pressure too.

Also I've currently got the balance shaft belt off to narrow things down more so they aren't involved.

If you put the washer in the wrong place (sequence) like between the gears or under a pulley, you could still have enough pressure on the oil pump drive gear to get oil pressure.
