help identifying an oil leak...
Guys,
I looked over a 951 recently and although the car was in excellent overall condition, i seemed to have spotted an oil leak. I was standing on the passenger side fender, looking down the opening in front of the valve cover and to the left of the power steering fluid plastic tank.
Given that i didn't have the chance to go underneath the car, i couldn't figure out what the wet surface was, whether it was the control arm or the oil pan "lip". Again it was more of a dump surface than a huge dripping leak. Both power steering tank lines where dry and in excellent condition.
Thanks again. Peter

Since you specified a fairly general area, I will give you some of the things that yould possibly be leaking:
- Oil drip after oil filter change (filter is upright and WILL leak some oil when you change it).
- Improperly tightened Oil Filter.
- Oil Pressure Sender.
- Oil Cooler gasket.
- Front Cam Tower Seal (behind cam pulley).
- Front Cam Tower O-ring (Between rear cam pulley cover and cam tower).
- Lower Balance Shaft Seal (behind lower balance shaft pulley - bottom left if looking at engine from front).
- Lower Balance Shaft O-ring (behind lower balance shaft cover).
- Oil Pan gasket - each corner of the gasket must be sealed to prevent leakage.
I think that's just about everything it can possibly be in that area of the engine. Good luck!
