Default 3L Mileage

What kind of Mileage do you 3L guys get? And what kind of driving do you do to get what mpg?

Just curious I'd like to do a 3L build someday.

In all honesty, I don't care. I don't take it on long trips, or anything. It's a fun car, so I just fill her up and go!

I would assume tho that like with any car, it's controlled by your right foot. You could probably get 20-22 without issues if you were just highway cruising.

Ditto.... Who cares, if you worry about it, it spoils the urge to plant it and take it to +5000 and get the goose bumps.
FWIW Over 8 years I'm averaging 20.27. Month on Month: 16-23 depending on mood.

I can't comment on a 3.0 i4, but with good engine management and a light foot you should get pretty good gas mileage. I get about 23.5-24 mpg average out of my 3.0 litre i6 in my 530i/5 and about 30 mpg at 70-75 on the highway running about 3k or so RPM. The engine is a m54b30 found in e46s and e39s and gets roughly the same economy as the smaller 2.5l version of the engine.

Is there a reason to believe the MPG would be much worse? The horsepower requirements to maintain 70MPH are the same, and I'd tend to believe the MPG of even a modern V8 would be similar.... Corvettes can get 28-29 with the cruise on, not that its a direct comparison, but it does show that displacement and 400HP aren't the problem.

I'm getting about 17city/19hwy. Two things though, it runs rich (never finished tuning) and it has huge cams. The cams are getting redone in the next few weeks to a profile that is more suitable to my usage. The cam change alone, should add a few mpg.

No there isn't. If anything I would think with the improved management and all the engine work they could even be more efficient than stock. Horsepower is a figure of efficiency.

I can get 23 or 24 city in my NA and just over 29 on the hwy.

There is definitely an inverse relationship between the fun having pedal and mpg's...

I'm always amazed by my MPG. I can get close to 30 if I just cruise around. Even when I get on it around town, I still get at least 20-22. My car stays in closed loop targeting 14.7 other than when on heavy throttle.

You can hit 30mpg with a stock car, I see no reason why a 3L with a good tune couldn't get 25-30pg.
