Removing the exhaust manifold??
Does anyone know a good way to get the exhaust manifold off a 944 turbo? I was looking at it and there doesnt look like there is enough room to pull it out from the top once its unbolted. And there doesnt look like there is enough room from the bottom either. Any help would be great.

a jackhammer. or at least that's what i wanted to use,after breaking 2 exhaust studs off in the head.... *grumble*
what you have to do (from my experience) is to unbolt it and pull the studs, if you're doing it in the car (i was replacing mine as it was out of the car).

I would also recommend pulling the studs. On my 944 turbo they're removable if undone from the crossover as well, from above. I've seen a few that sat almost against the frame rail, though that amount of variation seems a bit unusual.

You are pulling the head, right? Take the six bolts off of the exhaust to header coupler, then lessen the stud to the head bolts and pull away. The head and the Headers come off as a unit.

On some cars (randy's), the head will not come off the car w/the headers still attached. He was told he has B&B headers, but they appear to be the factory headers w/the heat shields removed...

No I am not taking off the head. All four of my exhaust gaskets are blown and the header has several cracks under the shielding so I want to take it off and put another one I have on with new gaskets and studs. My exhaust leaks are so bad from this that my car makes 3 psi at the most.

potent, you seem a little confused, I think it's clear that I've removed an exhaust manifold before, and ditto for beab951. Perhaps the confusion is coming from manifold vs. headers. In this discussion, exhaust manifold = headers.

Pulling the exhaust studs is kinda risky - if the head is staying in the car...
If you need the room to get the headers off, jack up the front of the car. Remove the passenger side wheel, and put a jack (padded!) under the oil pan.
Then - disconnect the 2 13mm bolts that hold the motor mount to the cross member, and then slowly raise the jack a little. The engine will move a bit which should give you all the room you need - even in the tightest spaces.
Remember to reconnect the 13mm bolts before removing the jack under the engine.

If you remove all the exhaust-manifold nuts from the head, you can then double-nut two thin nuts to lock onto the studs. Then unscrew the inner nut to pull the stud out. I don't like pulling studs because of the risk of stripping the threads in the head.
Then take one of them down to your Toyota dealer and get a replacement in the correct length that has an allen-key hole in the end. This will make re-inserting the stud and tigthening it down much, much easier (and safer on the threads).

maybe my local toyota dealer sucks, but they didn't have anything close (all far too big of a diameter.
does anyone have part#s for these magical toyota allen-key studs?

Try your local Saturn dealer – they have exhaust studs that have a male torx fitting on the end – much easier than stock or the Toyota stud.
In addition its always fun to tell the parts guy that they are going on a Porsche – remember the Saturn TV commercial that showed a Saturn driving around the track with a bunch of Porsches!!
If you are not pulling the head then you definitely want to double nut some of the studs to get them out. It is usually easy than one would think!
