Unhappy Changing AC Compressor...

Hi All,

I'm going to change out my A/C Compressor and convert to 134a in the process... I have a pretty good idea of what I'm getting into, but I wanted to know if anyone has performed this on their car and have any tips or tricks before I get started.

I am concerned mostly about how to go about flushing out the lines before I install the new Compressor and Dryer... any how to's out there?

well i got my sytem recharged with a retro kit and no further upgrades and she blows cold. I was told opinions on what needs to be changed in a system are different from years back ...so the need to change equipment is often not needed

Yeah, I don't think you need to change out too many parts as long as you drain all the old stuff. The new lube mix is made to be more compatible than before.

You do not have to do anything but empty out the oil in the compressor and recharge with new compatible oil and R134a. The recharging should be done by an authorised company to make sure you get the right amounts and that the system is vacuumed.
...but it is wise to change the drying filter and the o-rings at the connections.

I got a service kit including the washer valves for $100 here in Sweden so I rebuilt the compressor myself. No magic but you need some experience. A new compressor cost about $900 here.

My compressor failed so I looked into converting my system to R134a. Took it to the local dealership and the service department had to call the Porsche tech line. End result was that the compressor has to change (not sure if because the orig failed or if it requires a different compressor), the receiver - drier (should be changed on all services), and there three O-rings that HAVE to be upgraded. Porsche said that R134a will eat the old style seals and you will eventually loose your charge. Also the oil that they put into the system to lubricate the compressor is different than what is used in the old system.

By the way, when you ar at it, coat the compressor with some anti corrosion stuff otherwise oxidation will eat in past the big o-rings, sealing the casing, if you drive in a corrosive climate.

Thanks Guys... I'll let you know how it all turns out... I finally feel motivated to do the work... It was 86 degrees this morning when I left for work at 7:30am... if that isn't motivation, I don't know what is. <img border="0" alt="[ouch]" title="" src="graemlins/c.gif" />

If there is still some old R-12 in the system, have it removed by an experienced shop. The stuff isn't too environmentally friendly and you also don't want too much left in there to mix w/ the new 134.

I don't think you need a new compressor unless your current one is leaking (like mine).

Search the Rennlist mailing list archives. Several people have done the conversion and posted good write-ups.

Larry,

If you break open the system, you should pull a vacuum on it to get out any moisture that will sneak in while changing the compressor.

Do our cars have a high pressure A/C valve?

And who knows where I can find the O-rings for the hose connections at the compressor and the drier?

i just went to a simple little ac shop they threw on a retro kit and one hour later blowing cold So as for the seals and high pressure valves i think many ac shops can handle the recharge and change to the new 134
