What are the first modifications for reliable power?
Hello Rennlist users!
I have driven my 951 all over the U.S. for over six years and LOVEit! I am currently rebuilding and after reading the discussions in this forum I knew I had to join. Please feel free to help me find the best modifications that would bring the most reliable horsepower.
I have been thinking that MAF, chips, and K&N cone filter is the ticket. Please enlighten me as to other great mods and/or more concerning the few that I listed.
Great to see the expanse of knowledge you all have gained regarding the 944 Turbo.

Oh how true!
I am but an innocent
Yet, I have already convinced several friends as well as one immediate family member to join me in owning the 944 turbo.
We need additional enlightenment! <img src="graemlins/oops.gif" border="0" alt="[oops]" />

MAF - Expensive for what it does. Better alternatives out there for less money (MAP sensor, etc.) Most of the performance gains from the MAF kits come from the chips.
Chips: Give good power gains for the dollar. Reliability might be an issue. There has been many a thread about the rich midrange/lean high load conditions that APE chips will give you.
K&N cone filter - not worth the paper they are made of. If I recall correctly people have lost power going to a K&N filter over the stock airbox - primarily due to taking in warm engine air. They also do not filter as well as the stock filter.
I just went through a rebuild and by the far the biggest bang for the buck was a new turbo. A new turbo will cost you about as much as the MAF and give you better performance gains. Chips and bigger injectors would probably be a good bet at this point to keep it reliable. A good working wastegate and boost controller will finish off the package.
Good luck!

So what do I do with the conflicting stories from Huntley, Powerhaus, and Guru?
I had not looked into Guru till you mentioned them. Thanks!

This was not a good question. I can certainly appreciate the value of a MAF over a larger turbo.

Call them all and "search" the rennlist posts...
It won't be pure coincidence that you see "Danno, Travis or Guru Racing" come up...
I'm personally holding my water for the BIG (HUGE, MAMMOTH, GIGANTIC) Christmas clear the house sale...
(Mother of God...I kill myself... )

No conflicting stories, they're just jealous ! Check out the "Testimonials" on our website for references. Feel free to contact any of our customers on their experience. Do a search for "Huntley" in the past 2-months. Should bring up some interesting threads, especially the one where he posted photos of his "customer" cars... heh, heh..
