Ok, so what's the history and significance behind the "live long & prosper" sign given by Spock?

The only reason the V-sign is now known in England very well, is that the V-sign for Victory used by Churchill was actually used first, not for victory, but as a reverse of when the allies started to take back France during WWII. It was meant as a sort of mickey take of both the French and Germans. After that of course, he used it everywhere, and because of the politically sensitive nature, it was quickly remodelled into the V-for-Victory salute.

As suc, the whole history of this became a bit better known in the English schools!

Its actually a secret Vulcan sign that roughly translates into "Star Wars is better than Star Trek."

The hand gesture that Spock makes is the jewish symbol of the Cohains (one of the 3 tribes of Israel). The gesture is in the shape of the shin (hebrew letter).

Danno -

Sloth is partially right here, but let me elaborate.

"Spock" was brought up in the Jewish trasition. On the high holy days, the "Co-han-eem" or priests (direct decendants of the Levite tribe - one of 12 tribes) are commanded to "Bless" the congregation. In respect, the congressioners are supposed to avert their eyes, while the priests themselves usually cover themselves with their "Tal-eet" which is the Jewish prayer shawl worn by men (and sometimes women now.)

Anywho, the Cohen's (priests) made the sign under their shawls, as it is symbolistic of the "real name of G-d" which was uttered only once a year by the high priest in the temple near the ark of the covanent.

"Little Spock" got curious one day, and looked while he was in synogogue being blessed. What he saw was one hand (the real hand gesture is the spock sign using BOTH hands, with thumbs and index fingers touching) uncovered by a priest who was in the process of the blessing.

Since then, he decided to memorialize that time, and whammo - we have the vulcan sign.

Hope that clears it up!

Jay
(A real live "Co-hen" - priest thing - if you happen to believe in that stuff. Oh - technically I can marry people too. LOL. And I don't have to work for real, I get the tithe. And I have to go first. Or last - which is what usually happens to me....)

Nicolas, the difference is in the direction the palm of the hand is facing:

Palm toward receiver (a la Churchill) = Victory
Palm toward sendee )a la McQueen) = **** OFF!

Spock's hand gesture is actually a sign of defiance against all hostile life forms, indicating the presence of all fingers available for that Vulcan specialty, the Mind Meld. Also a secret sign for "Score!" when Captain Kirk bags the blue-skinned alien babe with no navel in each episode.

OK I really don't have much to say other than, "here here"!

I too agree. Gotta love this forum.

OOO! I Know, I"VE GOT ONE!

While I know about the origin of a "toast"

...where does, "Here here" come from? I'm presuming it's British.

Oh... and I too love this movie (just take a look at my signature.) and need to watch it as well. (...Maybe this weekend while its snowing outside with a nice, warm, crackling fire inside and nothing better to do than crank up the volume on all the race scenes!)

I'll just try not to think about my poor baby down in the garage in a million and one pieces sitting in the sub-freezing temps.

Sorry, didn't mean to bring you down.

Who needs the History Channel when you subscribe to Rennlist...I want you guys as my "Phone-a-Friend"

Anyhow...what's the origin of the gesture involving the fingers together, tips touching the chin, back of the hand facing away, and then flicking your hand away from you?

When I watched the movie, I thought Steve McQueen was making a friendly gesture (which for an American that would be) rathar than a taunt. It just looks that way in the single frame and makes a good poster.
