What I did was clamp that soft line between the tank and pump with some vice grips that had electrical tape wrapped around the jaws to keep from marring/cutting into the line (it should be noted that my line had also been replaced so it was nice and pliable, if you try this on something 20+ years old you may not be as lucky). Unscrewed and removed the side from the pump (some will leak back so be ready to catch that), then just loosen the one on the tank side and turn it 90 degrees so the pump end is pointing down. Then just get yourself a 5 gallon gas can (or several, depending on whats in the tank) and let it flow in there, if you get near the top re-clamp the line and switch cans.

Do yourself a favor and replace the gas tank strainer while you are at it. I doubt the screen would hold up to a cleaning if its original, and they aren't that expensive.
