That's pretty funny they gave the 944 turbo less points for having less "torque" vs. the 911...

I don't understand all this talk about turbo lag? If you're not trying to launch the car, turbo lag's not much of an issue, power's a stab of the shifter away at anything above a walking pace. Ofcourse I also think buying a 944 turbo, or most any Porsche for strictly in city driving is somewhat of a waste, but don't let my opinions offend any of you.

I have both cars. And I love them both.

My 84` 911 3.2 targa in Euro spec. has no cat.conv. and therefor 10.3:1 and 231 hp. And it is some 300 kg lighter than my turbo cabrio, with 250 hp (OK, after being rechipped it has some 275 hp).

Anyhow, driving in the black forrest up- and downhill tiny little roads with narrow curves makes more fun - sorry to say - in the C1.

Driving on the Autobahn and seeing a 964 or even 993 in the mirror makes more fun in the 951. Actually, up to now I did not manage to reach the top end speed of that car. Even with open roof I had 260km/h on the clock. And that was not the end....

In the C1, you get wet hands beginning at 220 km/h

But that tricky handling of the 911 is what 911 drivers love.......

Or...they're moping along at a snail's pace under 3k RPM's and upon mashing the throttle they declare, 'whoops, TURBO LAG!!' before they've even reached boost threshold for the engine. Then he's not a doofus anymore...he's retarded.

Perfectly said, G96 ! And we should not forget, that the 951 transmission is far "longer" than the one of the C1.

If, for example in the fifth gear, that reaches up to 280 km/h, I should not expect that the car pulls like an elephant when acceleration at 80 km/ in fifth.

And, the gearbox of the 951 is far better than the 915 box. So no worry to change gears before pedal to the ....

I think a lot of what makes the 951 feel 'heavy' is the gearing. Not a lot of fun around town, but get it to the track and the gears are about right! Compare the 951 to an S2 for street driving, the S2 admittedly has more torque, but I think gears more similar to an S2 would make the 951 feel a lot snappier.

Luke, I bet the quarter mile test included a shift to 4th while the 0-100 was done by hitting the limiter in 3rd.

if the author didn't like the body styling of the 951 then I'ld aggree he would recognize style if it kicked him in the b@lls. 2 years ago I was ready to buy a new car, and ended up not buying anything because I didn't like the way, 90% plus, cars were designed. I couldn't have designed the 951 better myself. but one day a 944 passed me and lightning struck, "what the hell is that". Im owning my 2nd one now. I think the styling was way ahaid of it's time. If I had 90$ and a choice between a new 911 targa (my favorite 911) and a well kept 35$ 951, I'ld take the 951 without thinking. man I could go on and on about this but im tired. I'm gonna end this with 'the 951 roxors and owns us all'. there, put in the lastest teen terminology.

Well that was some interesting reading. Here we go; I think 911’s of that era are pig ugly – article talks about their timeless looks – which planet were they on Mars? I have to laugh – 911’s of that era look dated as hell whilst 944 Turbo looks a modern classic in comparison. One year later 951S was introduced which would dust the new 911 Carrera for breakfast in no time at all. Not to mention it was a true race car. Everything - suspension – wise on the 951 is adjustable. 951 was set-up as a GT car from the factory - it does not mean it is one. 911 was set-up sportier! If you lower a 951, turn the shocks to firm the only thing a 911 can do is to go home to bed. You can yank a 951 at 120mph from hard left to hard right on a track. Ha - try this in a 911 – no, no, no!

I am sick and tired of some fat magazine writers who test the cars and come back with such stupid article which only indicate how clueless they are. 951 was built to replace 911 by Porsche. There is a lot of true 911 Porsche ‘’enthusiasts’’ – ‘’the *******’’ if you ask me who hang on to this 911 is the best and air cooled is the best and I have one so it must be the best Porsche kind of attitude. Grow up and embrace technology is what I say to them and admit defeat. 944 was the wining champ of the Porsche cup series in Europe for 5 years - full stop. Ugly old 911’s - go home! 944 TS is the better car of the two and was actually more expensive than the new Carrera 2 when it finally went out of production - end of story. It’s like arguing that the turbocharged F1’s were better cars with 1000bhp’s on tap than the new F1’s cars – grrr I don’t think so they lap circuits 2-3 seconds quicker!

However, the new GT 2 = space ship has arrived! But guess what - it drinks water!

Bye – he,he,he.

I like both the 951 and the 911(excluding the 996) very much but think that the 951 had to compete in a world that knew nothing but 911' s when it came to a porsche. In a way the people were brainwashed to the point that they couldnt have an open mind to the 951 which was clearly superior in performance and design.
What really gets me is how could the 951 be abused by people yet the new Porsche's that are made would be lucky to be compared to Audi's which is a great car. In fact you could say the new 911's are more like a Japanese car but not as reliable. I guess thats what you get when you get help from Mistubushi on how to modernize your factory and learn to make interchangable parts for the different models to cut cost.
How people can go crazy for a new 996 yet not give or ever have given the points the 951 earned just goes to show how susceptible they are to good propaganda.
Its too bad because the 951 today with mild mods is very fast and beautiful so you could imagine if they had kept on going with that program what the car could have been and as much as I like the older 911's go park it next to a 951 today and then go race them and youll see how unfairly the 951 was judged.
