Post Finally, brakes on my 951!

I've been pretty quiet lately, haven't driven my 951 too much because I was kind of scared of the car... my stock brakes are useless with nearly 400hp at the wheels. Finally got some real brakes... big reds up front, cross drilled in the rear. One question I have, my rear calipers (stock) are black, anyone with recommendations on matching the red color from the big red calipers? Or should I just keep the rears black, it looks a bit weird. Here's some pics :

Did you consider moving the old, stock front brakes to the rear?

I've heard that's a fairly popular upgrade...

As far as color, nope sorry I can't help...but I don't see why standard red brake stuff won't work...the $50 kits I mean, if you wanna go that route.

Well, the high dollar option is to get http://prospeedmotorsport.com to rebuild your calipers and paint them at $300 a pair. Kinda hard to justify spending that much.

Also, you should probably get one of these:

I'd keep it the way it is. Yes, I agree it does look weird BUT it get's you NOTICED! The contrast of RED front calipers with black rear calipers do stand out. PLUS your car is black.

I recently had my 1986 Porsche Red 944 Turbo front calipers rebuilt by Brakewarehouse for $250. They game me the color option of black, red or clear coat. So I chose red to simulate BIG REDS.

I, then, went to a Pocono track event as a spectator. Now, I don't have BIG BRAKES but the look of my RED front calipers drew a number of inquisitive people checking my car. I told them the calipers were painted. They walked away amused.

Your decision is the best decision. Don't cave in to other peoples opinion.

I asked about that, but I heard the people that's done that experienced premature rear lockup. I don't have ABS on my car, so rear lockups are a bit scary... =)

I did that on the SLK 32 AMG, looks great, but after 1 track day, they burned up and now I got brown calipers on the AMG. Looks really bad now.

Yea, I'm planning on keeping them as is for now. See how others like them, any bad comments, etc. Black calipers are better than brown ones (see AMG comment above) hehe.

Thanks! Now I just got those darn stickers to get rid of, I used to be a ricer, but I grew out of that a few years ago hehe.

I dont think your stickers are rice. With your car, you have an obligation to at least warn the other guy what he is in for.

I do have a question though.

Why the crossdrilled rotors? After all the talk about them, I was under the imression that they were not the best choice for high power applications.

The cross drilled rotors came as is from the Porsche factory. I've used aftermarket drilled rotors and they crack under high stress. We'll see how the factory drilled rotors perform soon enough.

Were the holes on the ones that failed beveled? I've heard that's supposed to stop cracking.

Hey rage,
Now that you've got some stoppers, how about a 0-100-0 time? Or whatever speed Car&Driver uses.

My 0-100 would suck, big turbos hurt launches. 2.4 second 60ft times. Yuck!

Finally got the brakes broken in and stomped on them hard for the first time today. All I can say is, WOW! I tested 'em going 160km/h, gave about 50%-60% pedal pressure, and the front tires began to lock. If it wasn't for rush hour traffic, I would've been able to try a 200-0 test =).

Big Reds are awesome. Finally brakes to match the power.

Rage-

Car looks great! Do you have any more pics of the car from the front? I'd like to see it to check out the headlights. Also, the brakes- do you have a G-Tech or any way to check your 60-0 distances? I would REALLY like to hear how you do...

Also- do you have an LSD? What type of TQ are you putting to the wheels? I would expect (assuming you have LSD) slightly better 0-60 times- I know the effect of larger turbo, etc, but assuming you have comparable TQ to your HP and LSD, I can't see how you would actually get slower times- well, I'm comparing to a stock Turbo S (5.5), but I would think you would at least get that, not actually SLOWER.... Any input? Just curious....
