I took my car to Bluegrass Motorsports for the 90,000 mile service. They said they couldn't perform the tune-up because I don't have a catalytic converter. I thought it was only illegal to take it off. What the hell? Has anyone had this happen to them before? I had a 700 hp Supra that Toyota did some work on. It definately didn't have a cat. What should I do?

Put the Cat back on? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
Or get a cat from a buddy and use that one.
Dealers are getting finicky these days....
It's illegal to remove, alter, or DRIVE a car without one - a street car that is.

EPA regs require that a shop either return a vehicle to compliance with the law or refuse to work on it, in the event that the customer refuses to install a cat, or other missing emissions device, the shop is supposed to refuse to work on the car and have the owner sign the invoice, stating that he has refused the repairs.

Bluegrass Motorsports. My, it is a small world
Both my 83 and my S2 cab were originally sold there.
You have so many alternatives in Louisville, why go to the dealer? They're not bad per se, but they are legendary for being way overpriced, terrible to get an appointment and just a tad stuck up.
If you want to stay in that area, I would cross the street and go to "St. Matthews Imports," or to my mechanic during the 7 years I lived in KY: "The Winning Formula" - now on Bardstown Road behind John E's.
Let me know if you need some more leads. BTW, if you're willing to pay dealer labor rates, don't waste any more time and go straight to "Stein Automotive," next to Bowman Field. They're probably the best Porsche shop in town. My former mechanic apprenticed there.

And if you don't like those options, try Motorsports in Lexington. They aren't a Porsche shop per se, but really seem to know their stuff. Talk with Curt or Shane...Stuttgart is another option, but they seem a bit pricier...with a little 'tude to go with...

Buy a cheap aftermarket cat, gut it, and cut and weld it in.
Simple solution.
You can probably find a used aftermarket cat at a junkyard for cheap. Find a tiny one that has the proper inlet/outlet hole sizes.
And actually, if you really want to do it right... find a cat that is 1/4" larger than the proper size. Then slip in a straight pipe through it (after you gut it) That's the proper size. Then weld up.

I still have the stock cat. Bluegrass Motorsports gave me an estimate of 2400 dollars to put a new cat in it. I got it taken off for 60 bucks. Doesn't quite add up. A new cat must cost 2300 dollars. Could there be a way to fit this cat over my straight pipe?
