Engine dynos tend to be much more ‘truthful’ than chassis dynos.

And now for your semiusless trivia fact of the day –
The average horse can put out about 2hp. The term ‘horsepower’ was defined by Robert Louis Stevenson as a method of rating steam engines. Since steam engines were competing with horses it was a benefit to ‘derate’ the power of the horse to make the steam engine look better. In reality a good size horse can put out almost 15 peak horsepower!

So I guess this means that my 300hp engine is really making 600hp min? And if I feed it a good helping of oats it has the potential of making 4500hp? In "reality" of course.

Sorry to disappoint you…it means that your 300hp engine is really making the ‘long term’ power of 150 horses or the peak power of 20 horses!

When you consider the acceleration of a race horse with a jockey it actually makes sense!

Spoil Sport!

Whats interesting is that HP was originally an arbitrary # used to compare a machine to an animal, for "bragging rites".
