Question Lightweight flywheel experiences?

Anyone have experiences with a lightweight flywheel on their car? If so did you see much of a difference/performance impact? Was it worth the switch?

A friend of mine has a lightened flywheel in his car, and that mother revs way faster than my car. He has APE2 chips, bigger FPR and injectors, tight suspension, and a strut brace, and the lightened flywheel is the thing I really noticed when driving his car, not the other stuff. Whenever I'm due for a clutch job, I'll be putting one in mine!

Any driveability issues? I keep hearing that lightened flywheels and cranks are great for track cars, but not so great for street cars.

Lightened flywheel is not a problem on the street.
Keep in mind, the lighter flywheel helps the engine revs up faster. Also, the engine will go down on the revs just as fast.

When shifting gears, you have to heal/toe to keep the revs high.

Thanks for the quick response, John!

Next question... as far as lightening the flywheel goes, should I take one to a local shop and have them do it, or buy one of the aluminum ones? I know the Turbo Cup cars were running 10 lb steel ones, and I was thinking that if it was good enough for them, then good enough for me. Whats the downside of doing that, tho? There must be some trade off, right, aside from having to keep the revs up?

I have no experience with lightening the stock unit. I just use the aftermarket aluminum one. If I'm not mistaken, it was originally designed for the 930 MY76,77.. It has been a while since I upgraded.

Not so long ago, someone posted a link to a company that sells them, and the price was inexpensive in comparison.

do not have much experience with light flywheels on 944/951 cars but have seen a lot of problems with lw. flywheels on 964 cars, stalling on decel and sometimes on take off. Changing base idle speed on 951 will probably help with this though, there is no idle speed adjustment in the C2/4.

Scott, I took delivery a factory unit from Garrity about a year/half ago. He took 4.75# off of it, we weighed his and the one I took off my car before the install of the lightened one.

I've got an aluminum 5.5lbs flywheel, no balance shafts, and a lightended/knife edged crank.

No issues driving on the street.
