Post 951 starting problem

Have had an intermiitant starting problem for years with my '89 944 TS. Car cranks fine, but doesn't catch, particularly after driving for 10 minutes and then being turned off. If I wait 15 minutes or so, it starts right up. New battery, 75K miles, otherwise pristine. Almost never happens when it is at my German car repair guys. Any suggestions? thanks.

It could be the DME relay. That sounds like what my car was doing before I replaced the relay. I now also cary a spare in the glove box.

If it's not the DME relay, it will be at some future date! Change it!

I had a similar problem. But I think my fix was probably a bit uncommon. My car would start up just great when cold...infact a little too great, I wouldn't even finish turning the key before the car started up. On days when I run the car and the car was warm the car would take about 3-10 seconds to start (it cranked fine, but wouldn't "catch").

It turned out to be a leaky injector. Had the injectors reconditioned and the problem went away. Now the car starts consistently within a second.

I had/have the same problem with my '88 TS and had posted the problem on Rennlist a couple months back. One workaround given by someone in Europe was to turn the key to the first position for a few seconds, then turn it off, and then immediately turn the key and start the car. This workaround has worked for me everytime. My mechanics says this method tricks the DME into thinking it has a "cold start."
