Post Apexi Super AVC-R

I'd like to hear from anyone who has the above referenced electronic boost controller installed on their 951. Pros and cons. Did you install it yourself? Difficulty on a scale of 1 to 10? I've been browsing eBay and the Apexi site(s) and nobody makes any references to a Porsche application. I know Huntley sells these, so I assume they can work with our P-cars.

Thanks,
RPK

Hey Patrick

For what it's worth, everybody I've ever talked to at the track say the Greddy Profec B is the EBC to buy. . . game over. It's on my list for early next year.

Been there, done that...

I think it works fine, you wont get the correct reading of the speed but there's lots of other nice things to do with it.
It took me a day to install it, I ran into some small problems but overall it went well. The most tricky part is to locate wire from the speedo to hook it on, but hey even that's a small thing to do.

it's been my experience that the greddy is the best and the apex will give you the most configuration options... but the apex's lack of fuzzy logic to predict boost will hamper how much you can do with it.
on single turbo cars like ours either one will work fine. on twin turbos or other setups DONT go apex. period.

Hey,

I was under the impression that the Apexi units were good because they can help with fuel tuning... that's pretty much the advantage they have over other boost controllers. Does anyone have experience with this on their 951's?

i like mine alot, it has many usefull features and i like how you can monitor so many diffrent things. it also has peak hold and 30 sec recording that could help in tuning. to bad no one ever figured out how to get the injector duty cycle to work. the install is not that bad, i think the speedo wire was the hardest part also, but it realy wasnt bad. i would say its probly the best or one of the best on the market. even without the high tech features its still the best looking one, and it matches my cd player

Sean,
Do you have the Sony Xplod w/ the black panel face?? I have the same one.. and I was planning on putting an A'pexi in the same spot as yours.. how random. So nobody can get the fuel injector tuning to work?

I love my AVC-R. The feature set is just awesome. The only drawback is it's REALLY tough to get stable boost if here's a leak anywhere in the system. Now that the leaks are all gone (finally!) on my car, boost is very stable. Before I found the leaks, I was ready to toss the AVC-R and get a Profec B to work around the leaks...

The gear based boost setting is a must have for me, otherwise I'd be just spinning tires in 1st and 2nd.

Soho951,

Yeah, I have the Sony xplod with the black face panel; I like the faceplate open at night. I think it’s a great looking combo. If im not mistaken huntley got the injector duty working, but they cracked into the ECU or KLR and did some modifications. Not worth the trouble IMO. I think you asked if the AVC-R controlled fuel? It doesn’t, that’s another product Apexi sells called the AFC. Looks the same as the AVC-R except controls fuel instead of boost. But I’ve heard it doesn’t work very well with our cars. In any case the AVC-R does work well with our cars. Oh yeah, if you get one and want to mount it the same way I did, I used a lindsey racing gauge panel. I stuck the AVC-R to the gauge panel with some two-sided tape that’s supplied with the boost controller.

good luck,
Sean

So...Rage2...(is your dad RageOne?) How did you go about finding (and solving) the leaks in your system. I anticipate finding some in mine, I'm hoping for a facilitative head start. Thanks.
