Question Anyone tried 18" turbo twist wheels on a later 951?

Anyone know whether 18x8 and 18x10 911 Turbo wheels will fit reasonably on a later offset 951?

I have 7.5" fronts and 10" rears (narrow offset) on my 88 Turbo S. They are the hollow spoke Technology style. Front offsets are 50, rear offsets are 65. They fit great, easy to clean. I even have small spacers in the rear, 10mm I think, to get the rears all the way out to the fender lip.

I thought that 18" are too big for the Spindles to support.

Patrick,
Did installing these wheels raise your ride height at all? If so, What wheel and tire sizes did you have before?
Thanks,
Russ

Ross,
You may want to check out that S2 thread on this. There is a post in there about bad things happening with 18's on cars that never came with them.

[quote] Tires/Wheels - Installing Approved 17 Inch Wheels
Group
4

Number
9303

Model
4 Cylinder

Part Identifier
4412

September 28, 1993

Subject:
Installing 17" Porsche wheels on vehicles previously equipped with 16" wheels.

ATTENTION: Service Manager / Service Technician

This bulletin replaces Technical Bulletin Group 4, Number 9303, dated 9-14-93.

Models Affected:
944 from 1987 with M3O option
944S from 1987 with M3O option
944 T from 1987 with M3O option
944 Turbo S 1988
944 Turbo 1989
944S2 from 1989

Concern:
Installing 17" Porsche wheels on vehicles previously equipped with 16" wheels.

Installation Information:A. Front and rear fender well lips must be reworked and/or checked for adequate tire clearance.

B. Suspension travel must also be checked. Parts such as brake lines, hoses and brackets must have adequate clearance.

C. New caster eccentrics, rear mounts and nuts must be installed in the front control arms. This change is necessary due to a change in caster specification on vehicles equipped with Porsche 17" wheels. The specification for vehicles equipped with 17" wheels is 3°15'-45 (see Figure A.)

D. Vehicles must have a rear stabilizer bar.

E. When adjusting vehicles to new caster specification, all alignment values should be checked at that time.

F. When summer tires are used on vehicles with 17" Porsche wheels, snow chains cannot be used. If winter tires are used, only snow chains with Porsche Part Number 911 361 924 OO may be used.

G. Tire pressures for front and rear 17" Porsche wheels is to be set at 2.5 bar (36 PSI) at approximately 20°C (68°F).

H. When using this rim and tire combination, a 17 mm spacer plate must be installed on the rear wheel hub. The customer must be informed that if the emergency wheel is needed, the spacer must be removed.

I. Not for Cabriolet vehicles.

Looking at the bulliten it does not list 86 anything. I thought that these cars have the weakest suspensions?

I was aware of the Tech bulletin and had read them on other forums, but my Independent local Porsche tech says "no worries."

I originally has stock wheels and tires, 225/50/16 and 245/45/16 on 16 x 7" and 16 x 9" rims.

Using a web site called www.powerdog.com allowed me to plug in prospective new sizes and get very close to the original overall tire sizes. My ride height did not change and the speedometer is right on.

The tech bulletin prohibiting 18s does not specifically say which models of Porsche cars it applies to, just "certain models." Since that bulletin was written there have been numerous 944 and 968 cars TUV certified in Germany with 18" wheels. Generally all that's needed on the 944 is to upgrade the rear A-arm caster mount to the 968 design. This part is required for 17" wheel installations also. The 968 Turbo S came standard with 18" wheels and it uses the same basic suspension.

Thanks all.
Tom, it looks like all I need to do is replace my caster block. Hmmm. I imagine the Racer's edge version would work nicely, and now I can justify it to my lovely bride.

Whats the reason for changing the castor block at the rear for fitting 17" wheels?

I have 17" Technology style wheels fitted by the previous owner on my 86 with spacers to correct the offset but I dont know if the castor has been changed...

The newer part is a lot stronger. Look at your part and then compare it to this one shown below which has a lot more metal and a lot less rubber.
