Default 951 tranny noise/shifts

Question 1: Does everyone's 951 transmission make that mechanical friction sound on deceleration -- it's most noticeable when decelerating in 2nd gear. I've had 3 tranny's in this car (with a rebuilt TT and new axles) and every one of them has done it, including a freshly rebuilt unit.

Question 1A: Do 968 transmissions make this sound too?

Question 2: How notchy is your 951 tranny going from 1st to 2nd at WOT?

1. No noise out of mine.
2. I wouldn't call my 1-2 "buttery" under load, but mine is street driven, and WOT in first is almost useless with my 26/6. I can't imagine the tire smoke in a more modded 951.

1: yes. It's even more pronounced since I went to a solid tranny mount
2: mine is somewhat balky as the syncros mesh. I've learned to not speed shift unless I'm qualifying or racing.

1. Yes, though fresh gear oil helped a bit. Seems louder once hot.
2. Yes, mine is very notchy when cold, but alot better when hot. It's synchro's in mine. I'd say it's 80% better hot, hoping my new semi-solid trans mount will solve some of it.

I had always assumed that that noise was the clutch, not the transmission, but maybe we're talking about a different noise. In any case, an early car I drove last year didn't do it, but both of mine have.

I normally don't get anywhere near red line in first gear, but I do find that easing off the gas a little earlier as the clutch pedal goes down makes the 1-2 shift a bit easier in my case.

All the boxes I've had all has some chatter on decel. A close friend of mine has a car that is really noisy on decel but it's been that way for nine years now.

1) No.

2) With a half second delay, no crashing on the 1-2 shift.

1) Yes, I have a bit of noise; it's like a rattle. Hear it in low gears, no load. Decel is a form of load and I don't really hear it then (but maybe my deceleration drone from my exhaust drowns it out)

My previous 951's tranny had more noise coming from it; it was an open diff, whereas the above present 951 has LSD (I don't know if that makes a difference).

1a) maybe ask in the 968 forum; my buddy has a 968, I don't recall hearing the noise (but then again he's often got AC DC rockin' on his sound system)

2) my 1 - 2 shift is always a bit rough. If I make that shift close to redline it sometimes "grinds" into 2nd.
I hate that, so I end up pausing a split second with the shifter in the neutral position.
All my previous 951s have done the same thing.

1) The transmission was 100% quiet with the original engine and a stock clutch. As soon as I had the new engine in with the KEP2/930 disc combo it became noisy in the same conditions - decel at low rpm in 2nd gear.

1A) Yes.

2) Mine sometimes makes a brief but loud whirring noise when if I want to switch from 1st to 2nd gear too quickly. It's always done that even with the previous engine/clutch set up but has never been particulary notchy and it did not get worse since I installed a short shift lever on the gearbox last year.

Both of mine 86 & 87, are noisey on decel. I run Redline in them & that helped a little. The 87 has 200k and shifts like new, while the 86 is notchy with 68k miles.
