Currently the latest version of the STi is shown to edge out the EVO in Japan. The US has the same STi as Japan except the engine is 2.5L/300hp/300lb-ft while Japan has a 2.0L/280hp/290lb-ft. The EVO, to say the least, is not even close to the Japanese version. It is missing active differentials (sorta like the STi's DCCD: driver controlled center diff), AYC (active yaw control), front LSD, gained 150+lbs in weight due to US bumper strengthening, less hp (280 compared to 271), less torque (287 compared to 273) and no 6 speed.
So by correlation, the US spec STi should fairly tromp the EVO.
P.S. Mitsubishi isn't really stellar for it's reliability, though I've heard they've improved over the years.

I beleive the STi could take a 951 at the drag strip. Why? TRACTION. That AWD system would allow for pretty good lanches and that's where we know the 951 is terrible. I don't know, however, how well the WRX drivetrain would stand up to that kind of punishment - dropping the clutch at 6000 rpm can be a little hard on things. On another note, the 951 would equal if not destroy the STi on the highway. The STi is still a "glorified econobox" with a powerful engine and it really doesn't shine at high speed. I have a friend with a '98 vette that will do a 12.9 stock and he said my car (300+ HP 320 TQ @ flywheel) feels faster once she gets up on boost - but of course the optimum word here is 'feels' - no proof to back it up.
No matter how you look at it, all these cars are a blast to dirve in their respective niches. Ever hear of rally racing in a 951??
