I have a track day coming up next weekend….maybe I should load this up and put the iPhone4 in my pocket….

Actually I am interested to see how app can differential between vertical, horizontal and lateral acceleration. Unless the iPhone is mounted is a very exacting way it will be difficult for it to figure out what is actually happening. I tried out some G sensing apps in my phone while skiing this year – very hard to decipher the results when the measuring platform is changing position all the time (this will happen if the iPhone is in your pocket). BTW – I was able to get consistent 3g’s in a good turn with very grippy snow!

Chris, why don't you send the skiing data to your insurance company and ask them if you qualify for a safe drivers discount.

My worry is that the insurance companies will be sent this data to themselves unbeknown to the user, and use it against them the next time they have a claim. Already using air bag data in court, whats next? Could be we all have to bring in our cars black box if we have a claim.

This seems funny now, but it soon won't be. They make it seem like a fun game to get people used to the idea of surveilance. It is not too much of a leap to see a future where auto-text messages to insurance companies and/or police are sent when thresholds are exceeded.

Chris,
You are correct. You will need to mount the phone in your car. I wonder if you can get a 0 score?

I think if you break the phone in an accident, you get a 0.
