Going to Colorado... '89 951 Purchase
Thanks to all of you for your advice on the '89 951 purchase in Colorado. I think I drove the guy nuts with all of my questions about the car but oh well. Rather too many than not enough. I'll be driving to Colorado at the end of next week to do the final look over and buy it(if no surprises). The guy had PPI done at a Porsche dealer and I actually talked to Porsche mechanic that did the PPI today, he said the car is a great example of the breed inside and out. He said that he's been working on Porsche's for 18 years and this one is in top shape mechanically (of course what I wanted to hear).
I've taken the advice from many to drive out there with nephew in tow and do the trip right. We'll be taking my '86 944 out there and driving the two back together. I can't wait... it will be awesome racing him back all of the way to Michigan. We're thinking of buy 2 radar detectors for the trip (never broke down and bought one before) & two of those little hand help walkie' talkies you can get relatively inexpensive at Walmart.
I'll be taking I-80W pretty much all of the way to Denver. Does anybody recommending and stopping points with cool inexpensive things to do with my nephew... would like to make this a trip to remember.
I'll post pics of the car when I return

Congrats, it sounds like you have done it right! Since I doubt the n/a is going to be in the lead very much, You'll probably be fine with just one radar detector! The walkie talkies (personal radios) are an excellent tool for any kind of caravan/roadtrip. I have a set and use them often and loan them to friends going on caravans.
Have fun!

Cory - I too have a '89 and live just south of Denver. It was the only '89 I've seen in the area until last weekend at a PCA event I spoke with a guy who just bought a silver one locally, but it was in the shop at the time.
If you have some time, let's get together while you're here. Meanwhile, if you still need something checked out on the '89 let me know.

Your drive may be a little boring, but if you want to make the trip worth it you gotta take the trip through Boulder and up into the mountains. The drive up Canyon Blvd. up to Nederland. You'll love the drive (one 's' after another) and there are a bunch of great photo-ops. And if you have even more time go to the Rocky Mountain National Park in Estes Park Colorado. Believe me it is absolutely unbelievable and beautiful. Tons of photo-ops. Let me know if you want to - I have an annual pass for the Rocky Mountain National Park you can borrow (otherwise $15). I am originally from the Chicago suburbs and have been in Boulder for the past year - my saying now is "GOD created mountains for Porsches" because you really don't get to appreciate it until you drive the weaving mountain roads. I go up there all the time just to drive - what a blast. Either way, have fun.

There's also that road that goes over the top down into Winter Park. The highest paved pass in the U.S. I think? Once you're at that point you might be better off continuing into Wyoming for the trip back.
Isn't Montana the state with no speed limit on some roads?

Cory,
Congratulations on your forthcoming roadtrip and purchase. Last fall, my nephew and I drove from the Chicago suburbs to New Hampshire to pick-up my 1988 951. It sounds like you did everything right so far, from the multitude of questions to the PPI. I did the same thing, including the discussions with the mechanic at the Porsche dealership. However, I trailered the car home behind the family truckster just in case something was missed.
If you like roadtripping, there's nothing like a trek across the Great Plains. If you are going into the Denver area, you have two choices of routes when you get to western Nebraska, either cut down I-76 into CO and a direct southwest line into Denver, or continue on I-80 into Wyoming and then head south on I-25. The latter will allow you to duck into Boulder for a little sightseeing if you have time. As for things to do along the way, there isn't much unless you get off the interstate. However, once in CO, I highly recommend a trip through Rocky Mountain National Park. If there isn't time for that, at least take a ride out west of Denver on I-70 and bypass the Eisenhower Tunnel by going up and over Lovland Pass.
If you are looking for a place to stop for the night, Lincoln, Nebraska is about a full day's drive west of Chicago and has plenty of convenient hotels. Also, the drive from Lincoln to Denver will only take you about 3/4 of a day and allow you to arrive by mid-afternoon if you get started early enough in the morning.
The TalkAbouts are a great idea. You can get a set for less than fifty bucks at most stores. I'd forget about the radar detector and just keep the speed reasonable as the troopers are pretty agressive out west. With 70 mph speed limits, you can make pretty good time. I'd also recommend bringing a portable CB radio and a scanner. This will allow you to get weather, traffic, and police reports on the fly.
Have a great trip and enjoy your new toy.
