Question Loctite 574 - replacement

I am getting ready to put my lower crank housing together with my block, and I was looking around for the Loctite 574 required by the Porsche manual.
My local supplier contacted the Loctite folks and they said that 574 is obsolete and that a slower setting Loctite 518 is the replacement.

Has anyone tried this? Any problems? Anyone using a different product?

Thanks,
R.B.

That's news to me. Loctite 574 has been used by Porsche since the '70's.

If you find some, make sure that you do not overapply it. Use a fine, short nap roller and don't let it pool. The tolerances are extreamly tight and too much will cause problems. More is not better in this case.

Go with Loctite 574. I tore my hair out trying to find it locally. Just order from Paragon or another Porsche parts supplier.

Don't use something different. It was a PITA to lower the oilpan so that I could reseal the oil pump after I used some other junk on it and it leaked.

I used a 1" plastic wallpaper roller to spread it evenly, did the trick.

I have heard that Yamabond is a great substitute and can be found at any Yamaha dealer. I too have had trouble finding 574.

Couldn't find any Loctite-574 around, so I used Yamabond-4 the last time I replaced my oil-pan gasket (for the 2nd time in 1 month). Held perfectly fine and when my #3 cylinder blew with massive blow-by, the oil-pan held fine with no leaks. Don't use the Yamabond-5.

Though many say different, I have always thought it best not to use a sealant when using a gasket. The Loctite 574 is used as a gasket. The factory manuals only call for sealants when not using a gasket, like on the oil pump and balance shaft covers. So far, I haven't had any leakage problems from using just gaskets on all parts of the motor. This applies to fibrous gaskets and obviously not something like a copper headgasket.
