Default P9201--purpose of 'telltale' needle?

I think I get how it works, but I don't understand the needle. Is it just so you can pull the gauge out without having to read it in the car? The dial zeroes when you spin it. What am I missing?

When the tool is mounted on the belt, it is difficult to see the reading. So, you use the tell tale to preserve the reading until you can take it off the belt and look at it.
