Post Starting problem getting worse...

I posted a while ago an intermittent start fault I had which only seemed to occur in hot weather or after driving in traffic. However, it is now happening more frequently even from cold.

When this happens the engine doesnt crank but I can hear an electronic humming sound (perhaps the fuel pump) and SOMETIMES a clicking sound like the solenoid on the starter. I can bump start the car no problem and it is not an immobiliser fault.

I have ordered the hot start relay from Pelican but dont think this will help. Is it worth just changing the starter or do you guys think something else may be breaking down?

Looks like your starter needs a service.I bought a service kit from local parts shop (universal Bosch parts), cost was about couple of €'s.No starting problems after that.

I had this exact problem and it was always after the car was warmed up or hot... it was my flywheel position sensor it was a quick fix and has been trouble free ever since...

Thanks for the replies guys - hadnt even thought of the flywheel position sensor. What did you do John, just replace it?

Olli - Was the kit just a universal kit for any Bosch starter? A new starter is pricey so this kit sounds a good idea but I cant find one over here - any chance of a part no.??

Hi Stan

Looks like your solenoid is dead or the bendix (gear mechanism) is blocked with dust from the clutch.

You might want to try here:
<a href="http://www.bosch.co.uk/intro.html" target="_blank">http://www.bosch.co.uk/intro.html</a>
The main rep is in Uxbridge, Middlesex
There must be an dealer / service shop nearby your place. They no doubt can tell you.

If you go for an replacement unit, make sure you got the right one. There was a thread on the 944/951/968 board (i think some 3 weeks ago) about this.
Something about direction of rotation, part no's for the starter are the same, just a little difference in a suffix.

I asked a service kit for 951 and it was readily available from parts store. It was universal kit which will fit for the most Bosch starters. The same starter our cars have is also in many other german made cars.I am not sure do i have box still left in my garage (for parts #), but i can find out.

had the same problem.check the computer. i took it apart and found 3 cold joints on the transistor
that sends power to the coil. it happened to me when the car was hot or when i hit a pothole.
ps. look for the largest transistor on the board
to identify.
