Ack! Smoke

Ack! Smoke
Merging onto the highway today with some friends in a car behind me, I went to WOT in 2nd and shifted hard at 6500 rpm. Friends tell me that a nice big puff of brown smoke came out of my exhaust when I shifted into third...he said it was like 4 feet x 4 feet of smoke.
Is that just from running rich when I got off the throttle or what? The car only has 65k on the original turbo, I'd certainly hope it wasn't dying....
APE stage 2 chips, LBE set to limit boost to .9 bar. Could the combination of .1 bar less boost and the APE midrange richness and being rich from getting off the throttle combine to send a bunch of fuel into the exhaust resulting in the brown cloud? What could produce a brown cloud other than smoke?
I don't get any stumbling or anything in normal acceleration.

If you're running APE chips that were designed for 1 bar boost, and you're running less, then you're in all probability RICH at WOT.
If there are no driveability issues at all, you should be fine...
I'd guess though that the smoke was more blackish than browninsh...
As long as it isn't white (coolant) or blue (oil)...
