Default Quick Summary pls - how to measure crank shaft end play

No hit in the archives. Lots of discussion on why knowing this is important but nothing on the actual procedure.

Can you do this with the engine in the car?

I suppose it could be done at the nose of the crank, with a pry bar and dial indicator/stand. Not sure how accurate it would be, but if you go back and forth 3-4 times, you'd find out.

I measured mine while doing the clutch replacement. I know I didn't use the factory method but I got repeatable results. Simply used micrometers as a depth gauge and measured against a flat surface on the block as I moved the crank fore/aft. I suppose you could do this using the crank pulley as well if belts and covers were out of the way.
