Post Do Ricers and 951 Owners Have Something in Common?

Recently had some friends over with 911's, which were all spit polished. My 951 was sitting outside..and looked pretty bad, hadn't been washed for a while..too busy driving it.

One of my son's friends shows up. He had never been to my house before. He's a mechanic at the local Honda dealer. A big Ricer.

Some friendly kidding goes on about trading his Honda for one of the 911's parked outside. The first words out of his mouth are..."Who own that Turbo? That's the one that really interests me."

What do you think...anything in common?

I think we need to be careful when we talk about ricers- I have doen some work with those guys and when they have more money in suspension and motor than most Porsche owners and have a car that is capable of running 10s at the strip and winning thier class at an autocross the next day that isnt rice. Even the real import racers hate rice- which to them means any import that has cosmetics or style or loud exhaust and no power to back it up. All show and no go- and they hate those guys as much or more than anyone else. Most of those guys are really up on turbo technology and electronics, its kinda cool really. I mean after all they are able to run a 10.5 to 1 stock Honda motor at 21psi and the thing just keeps going- Dont get me wrong- most of the imports with big exhaust and wild bodywork are ricers, and truly deserve the name

exactly, ricers give honda owners a bad name. just because they're cheap to buy and a 40 dollar exhaust tip + stickers makes their car look "cool" and sound "tough" . my friend owns a type r civic and always has people telling him hes dumb for working on a honda, meanwhile they're driving mustangs that are slower and cant take a bend at 50 that his honda can take at 120. its whats on the inside that counts.

Yeah, I guess to some degree. A salient difference (this is on the average) is that the sport compact guy is much more likely to exaggerate his cars capabilites and offer no real data (dyno sheets, timeslips, etc.) to back it up than the average 951 owner who is more likely to underestimate or downplay their car's capabilites. This is just been my general experience. There are certainly some rockin' well rounded cars in that world.

good point. but i think thats because anybody who owns a porsche doesnt need to bull**** about their car. other people do it for you.

Freedom of speech and all of that.

Seemed like a complement to me when the young guy said he really liked the 951. Or, is there more to the term "ricer" than I am aware of?

Well, I hate to break it out, but the term "ricer" refers to what people eat in the country of origin of all those cars - RICE. So if it's a honda, toyota, mazda, nissan etc. with stickers all over it, a HUGE spoiler, body kit, and sounds like a lawnmower, then it's rice.

Don't get me wrong though, although I've never encontered a fast ricer (faster than my 13.8 - not even close), they do command some respect when the mods are done right. Any car that can get down the strip in or around the 10s does!

When the average joe thinks of a Porsche he sees the bug eyed shovel nose of the 911 and doesn't think of a 944. How many of you have had your car called a Mazda RX7 or Nissan 240SX? So our cars are often confused with rice like those - but as we all know, they're not. In many many cases they have the same body style, which often appeals to the ricer croud.

The difference between rennlisters and ricers?

We boast in our sigs about our cars, rather than in stickers applied to our cars..

Ricers are the ones with more stickers than mods and "stadium bleacher" wings. You don't have to drive a rice car to be a ricer IMO, mainly the people that think their car is the fastest in the world bcause it's the fastest they ever owned. There's way too many in Cincy, Check out www.cincystreescene.com or www.cincinnatistreetracing.com You'll find penty there, along with plenty of BS, drama and sh*t talking. I like this forum ALOT better, and my chances of actually meeting smoeone or talking in person is pretty slim.

Yeah, I frequent the stlstreetracing forum occasionally as well. Lots of "I'd hand a 911 Turbo it's *** on the straights" kind of smack talk. Oh, and "I'd kill it in the twisties" too.

I'd also like to point out that 'rice' can be a helluva lot quicker than sauerkraut...buddy of mine has a whopping $4000-$5000 into an old 86 pulsar with JDM turbo motor, custom AWD setup, running about (guestimate) 250-300HP in a 2300lb chassis...I've seen the slips and am eagerly waiting for him to get the suspension set up, because I KNOW he'll kill the 951, and I know it eats up all kinds of muscle cars, ricer burners, and exotics. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather have the style AND substance of my 951, but there's something to be said for a guy who's put that much R&D into a car and gotten amazing results for not a whole lot of coin...so far his best slip is 13.3 @108 with FWD, T25 (smaller than what he'll be running this year), and open differential...I'm desperate to see what he can pull off with AWD, LSD, bigger turbo, and wider rims...he's already got the trap to run a bit quicker with an AWD launch, and the bigger turbo should help even more...guess rice can be tasty if you prepare it properly
