Guards Red and INDIA Red are the same color. It was sourced from the uniforms of the British Guard in India. The name change was prolly a marketing thing.
The paint code covers different formulations of paint, it is believed, as earlier cars seem more TOMATOEY (definite orange in there) and later seem more RED (less orange).
No one seems to know when the formulation change occurred, but it was not related to the name change.
Both names and the different formulations all fall under the same paint code.

OK, I'll play too.. This color is called glacier blue, and hidden behind the tinted glass is a Linen interior. I think it is an Audi color.(original) I have heard BMW offers a color called glacier blue also.

I was told by a body/paint guy, that there is a difference in shade for a reason. The factory muddies up the pure dye because a pure dye lot will not usually match the next. The closer the color is to the pure dye lot, the greater the chance of a variation in shade.
This is great stuff when conversation uncovers the history behind the design.
Guards Red or India Red?.....anyone else have historical reference?

My buddy had parts of his indian red S2 resprayed in Gauard (unknowingly), and you can tell the difference. The work shop manuals dont have a listing for guards.
Why would they change the name of a color that was so popular at the time

The red I like the best is Charro Rosso Red from.. what else, a FERRARI!!! Ahh... I wish I had $90K in 1985...
Notice the similarity to a 951? Pop-up round headights, fog- and driving-lights in the bumper, flag-style mirrors, flared fenders with waisted Coke-bottle sides.... I might even paint my A-pillars black to remove vertical lines and reduce the visual height of the car...
One thing to be aware of is that paint fades over time. So if you do a repair job and use just the color-codes from the book, it may not match what's on the car.
