'87 on heat shield on an '86? [pic]
Guys:
I bought a newer (I think '87 on) heat shield (the one beneath the headers) for my '86 951.
<img src="http://www.gtv6.org/Porsche/shield.jpg" alt=" - " />
I have not had a chance to try and install this ... will it fit without further modification?
The quality looks much better than the '86 version by the way (the reason I'm replacing it is that the old one rattles terribly).

Thanks.
I got it from 944online.com (Ian) and it was $58 + $11 shipping (which was less than the dealer - Barrier Porsche).
I'll post results once I have it bolted in - but visually, it looks much better (more substantial) than the '86 part that's rattling around in there currently.
Part number is 951 107 053 01.

sorry to add that the only reason this part would rattle is due the the fact the bolts are not tightened down all the way, it they are all tight this will not rattle, but the new piece will look pretty

When I removed it, the front mounting tab broke off from metal fatigue ... its kinda flimsy. I rivetted on an aluminium tab as replacement, but this seemed not to work too well.
Anyway, the new plate is thicker metal - I have to believe its good to have in there since Porsche apparently redesigned the part for the '87 model...

I got it installed tonight and the rattling is solved! <img border="0" alt="[jumper]" title="" src="graemlins/jumper.gif" />
The mounting had me confused because it looks like it mounts to the block with 3 bolts (the old one used only 2) but actually, only 2 are used just like the old one.
If you don't want to remove the oil pressure sender, oil cooler pipes etc, you need to disassemble the shield, as you can't get it in there as one unit. Once both plates and the bracket are in position, it can be reassembled (not without with a great deal of difficulty ) and installed.
Cheers,
Michael

Hey Michael,
Where do you take your turbo to for service around here in Seattle? Sounds like you're capable of doing stuff yourself, I was just curious about what shops you'd recommend. Drop me an email, jleblanc@real.com, or on AIM: wankle2k2

mine rattled because the thing was cracked and one of the mounting tabs where the bolt goes thru was cracked off.. i re-welded it w/ the help of a friend and then high-temp painted it black. ian rocks for parts when you can't fix it yourself tho glad to hear you fixed yours!!
