Post DME question

Hello,

I just recently bought a 86 951 ... one of the thing that turned up in the test drive / PPI was the car was only getting 4 PSI of boost. Turbo was fine, DME had just been replaced with a brand new one, the downpipe / cat had been replaced within 6 months so it looked like either the wstegate or KLR was bad... Talked them down to what I wanted and bought it.

Anyways I pulled the DME/ KLR out tonight and noticed that the part number on the DME was 944.618.121.04

according to the Porsche manual the turbo DME part number should be either
951.618.121.02 or 951.618.121.08

so this is not the right DME for a 951 correct? or has anyone heard if you swapt chips the 944 DME will work

thanks for any help
Bob

The 944 part number you list seems to be correct for cars up to MY 87 even though it's not listed for the turbo (nothing specific is for MY 86). The 951.618.121.08 is listed for MY 88 standard turbo.

Hi Obie, most likely you have a weakened wastegate spring. This will cause boost to bleed off earlier than normal because the KLR computer simply outputs a pre-determined boost-control single regardless of the wastegate's condition. Simple way to remedy this is to simply shim the wastegate diaphragm by about 4mm to increase the spring preload.
