Default Help - Customized turbo heat shield

I have installed an aftermarket turbo and noticed it generates a lot more heat than stock. I had wrapped the turbo and down pipe in March 2010 and this year noticed that the wrap is so brittle it breaks apart like glass. Does anyone have any suggestions to what material to use as a wrap or hints on a fabricated turbo heat shield? I already have the intake off.

Thanks

One builder recommended the Lava Turbo Shield for my aftermarket turbo but these come sized for T3, T4, and T6 turbos, not the replica KKK hotside I used for ease of bolt up. The Lava product is not supposed to turn into crumbling dust like most fiberglass shields.

I haven't bought one yet because I haven't figured out which one will fit best. I am also still looking for something designed for a KKK.

I used to work for a diesel engine manufacturer (Navistar) and we always used the wrap kits from DEI on our test engines.

I don't recall them having issues with crumbling. I just ordered one of their "generic" kits to wrap my 26/6 and header.

I added a stainless shield on top of the turbo (between turbo and intake and runs up to the brake heat shield) that bolts to the heat shield running by the balance shaft. I then wrapped the turbo in alumina cloth.

I then wrapped this around the turbo and AOS.

I use Ultra-High Temperature Foil-Faced Strips http://www.mcmaster.com/#thermal-insulation/=b5u6hl to wrap around some of the exhaust. It works very well. Look at the temp ratings 2300F.

Or if you want to stick with fiberglass. http://www.mcmaster.com/#thermal-insulation/=b5u82p
There are plenty of options and it beats the exorbitant DEI prices.

My plan is to have the hot side ceramic coated at Swaine before having Evergreen rebuild/upgrade it (k27/6).

Key word: "plan"

i would do hi temp black, instead of swain, its one step better than ceramic coating also. and I don't mean just paint, it is a special coating, I had my sfr custom headers, 3 piece crossover, 3" downpipe, and turbo hotside all coated with it, and am running a turboblanket with my garrett gt30r.

VERY NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Borat voice)

I installed a DEI "Titanium Turbo Shield" on my 951. I'm running a full-garrett dbb turbo w/ a 0.63 A/R T3 turbine housing, so it fits perfectly. I'm sure you could also use it on a KKK housing. It's not cheap, but works incredibly well to lower under hood temps.

I bought just the shield for about $100, as my downpipe was already wrapped. Worth the price, IMO.
